It'd be interesting to do a test between a modern BMW and an old school '87 Merc like the one I drive. I can legally do 120km/h in the old Merc, but I have a feeling that someone doing 200km/h in the beamer may be able to stop quicker, and more safely.

When you're doing over 200km/m and a car pulls out in front of you I doubt it will make much difference.

Sure, but for arguments sake, say it wasn't a moron and instead a normal driver.
Yes, but I'm wanting to know whether the outcome would be the same in a crappy old car vs. a new one with state of the art breaks, going quite a bit faster?

New breaks don't stop you faster, they just stop you with more control.

Link? I drive the old Merc; my old man drives the new beamer, and I can promise you it stops a lot quicker! Yet we are both allowed to go at the same speed?

Apologies, ABS & EBD will make the car stop sooner, ABS by itself is not as effective.

Either way, I'd rather have a car with ABS/EBD/ASC than trust my natural "oer f%ck" instincts in times of needing evasive actions

Hmmmm, so is doing 200 in a modern car really that big a deal? Or is it similar to someone in a 20 year old car doing 140 in a 120 zone? Something which will only cost your a few hundred rand for the fine.

Personally i've seen people only do 200 if they confident in their driving skills and car, showing off, or drunk, or running from the law..
The last three types of people are idiots
When I say confident in their driving skills and car, I'm referring them being able to make a decision as to how well their car handles high speeds (braking included), as well as being able to see whether the road is clear ahead and you have knowledge of the road. etc.. etc..
And then if you argue some one may be on the side of the road.
Well if they a pedestrian it's a highway, so wtf u doing there!! You'll die if you get hit at 120 and 200 so it doesn't matter..
If your car broke down, I hope your hazard lights are on, so drivers can see you, and make an informed decisions (at 60, 120 or 200km/h) since you are a hazard!! If you dont have any lights, your car is not road worth and is a danger to people driving at any speed..
Won't say i've driven over the speed limit ever
but "been" in a car at 200+ No big deal if you know the road (r21) and it's well lit now. Feels safer at 200 on that road at 1 (nice and empty 4 lanes) in the morning than it did at 40 km/h in peak traffic, when it was 2 lanes at 7 in the morning.. So Ya..

I find it strange that people are accepting it and not seeing anything wrong with going 2x faster than what is considered safe on the highway.
Problem comes in is that for rich people, what's R1000 to them? So, instead, he should be fined a R20% the value of his car (at new value) for each KM over the speed limit he goes.
Make that the law and you'll see how quickly people stop doing extreme speeds.

I get my diesel to 200 flat out, so don't think so.
True, that's the weird thing about the article - should the emphasis - if any in this regard - rather not be on the speed?

No.
Braking distances increase exponentially with speed. So a car doing 200 won't stop in twice the distance as the same car doing 100, it'll be more like 4 times the distance.
The modern BMW may have better braking than the old Merc (thanks to being lighter, better brakes, better weight/brake distribution etc.), but that might only mean it can brake as well as the Merc if doing 10kph faster. 200 vs. 120 - not a chance.
