Records of marks. In theory how can he progress to the grade/std he is in if he is as illiterate as he says? Did the system pass him? On what grounds? Was remedial correction ever suggested or attempted? Hence why I say the question needs to be asked "Why?".

Yes, you could say it was his fault if he didn't study but its the same as our varsity students getting into class and being unable to read or write properly. How did the system allow them to progress through school? There certainly needs to be an investigation as to why he is claiming what he is, even if it is just to prove that he really is a damn troll on the hunt for free money.
 
the sad thing is, if he lived in America and tried this stunt there, it would likely go to trial with some sort of outcome...

In South Africa it is too difficult to fail students. You can suggest failures to the GDE, but they need x amount of kids to pass, and its too much paperwork to fail someone

That's (our situation) happening because of people "demanding" that the standards be lowered all the time, instead of admitting that their children are too stupid/lazy/undisciplined/whatever the case may be, for the next grade, or to be admitted to university. So instead they wil dance and scream and burn **** and throw trash around until any idiot is let in regardless and the whole thing becomes a rubber-stamping excercise.

I don't think that's the case in Oz.
 
Well, if the school simply passed him from grade to grade without raising alarm or without informing his parents that there are problems, he might have a point. But surely the Australian education system can't be that messed up!?
