Nick i think we all know the K word is racist bud, ****** and negro those are all American words for black folk and through music they have lessened the effects of the word. No matter how you look at it this word was used badly. You don't call black people the k word no matter what. It is a terrible word considering our past and anyone stupid enough to use it deserves what mr scott has got.

You're missing my point. Those words have no intrinsic meaning than "black person", they've become offensive because black people have chosen to be offended by them. I'm not denying that the continued use of a word denoting race that someone is offended by is wrong or that the k-word should be viewed as unoffensive. Once someone has decided to be offended by a label the continued use of that label is offensive. And actually I don't blame people for being offended when they are addressed with a term that denotes their race. Even "unoffensive" racial terms take on racist undertones when you use them to refer to a person. Think about it.

You're just plain wrong. And this is why knee jerk PC censorship is bad. You don't even think you need to check your facts before you go off on a rant because you've been told a bunch of crap and then told not to even discuss it, it's so bad. You can't think about a word and all the history attached to it because you can't even say it because it's bad mkay?

So, tell me how does a term that is not meant as derogatory become derogatory? Do white people say "Hey, let's start calling black people black people instead of the k - word. Then we can start calling them the k- word as an insult"? Doesn't seem likely. What happens is black people decide that they are offended by the k-word and racists go "oh, so that's how I can offend you now".

If you think decades of oppression and racial abuse can go away in 2 decades you don't live in the real world. It will take another 50-100 years to go away, that racially abused generation needs to die off before we can even begin to think the wounds are healed. The reason i seem so aggressive is you think black folk are just taking it wrong, you cannot see that word represents a very bad past for them and that word was a word that were forced to live with, they were forced to take it as racial abuse because that is all it ever was and all it will ever be.

yup but you sound like you are trying to excuse the use of the word. You also indicated you think black people are ones making it a racial slur and they are getting offended for no reason. You have yet to show me you understand why they take such offense which shows me that you don't fully appreciate why and how the word become so offensive.

No, if you'd been reading instead of getting offend you'd have seen that I was quite clearly not saying anything like that. Seriously, go back and reread my posts from the beginning and then explain how you got any of that from what I wrote.

Anyway, I'm not sure that you understand yourself.

If I say umlungu is stupid or umlungu is a thief, the word umlungu isn't the offensive part of the sentencs. But, if I hear things like that enough, eventually I might associate umlungu with insult. I then might take offense at the word for it's own sake and prefer that you don't use the word. That's how the word itself becomes an insult.
