“People were socialising and drinking in the bar area. The colleague (Tshoaedi) also went to the bar and then Scott said, people who had not paid their debts were not welcome. Tshoaedi then left, but later returned. Scott saw that as a taunt, and used strong words... and called him the k-word,” said Morison.

Nothing new here this kind of stuff happens all the time in this racist society of ours and yet we will now act all surprised because he's a high profile broadcaster. :erm:

There were racists all over the place during Apartheid and they have retreated into a racist closet but they have not stopped being racist. Their true colours will always come out and betray them whenever they lose their inhibitions in a state of drunkenness.

what I find alarming is that Scott kept on banging on about how much money this guy owed him which seemed like a justification for calling him a k****r.

True, but then what do you have to say for the millions and millions of extremely racist black people? Why is it that they are allowed an open mandate on racial slurs, when they are sober no less? At least the other racists try to keep it in their closets, for PC sake.

I just wish that people on all sides would grow up. People must realize that if he is really a racist, then he has actually done bloody well. 17 year career under the new SA and this is the first racist slur to come up? Obviously he is trying really hard. Same applies if he is not a racist and it was purely a drunken slip of the tongue. Unless it is a constant and blatant attack of racism, why cant people just forgive?

Think about it for a second. People can get into drunken fights and forgive each other the next day. Why not this?

I think the two people involved in this incident have already kissed and made up. But unfortunately the media wasn't going to let it go seeing that he is in the public eye. Hence I said the only difference here is that he is famous otherwise this happens all the time to normal people.

We don't know if it was the first or last and we don't care. However, he has done the honourable thing and resigned and hopefully his career in the public eye will now fade into oblivion.

Kuli Robbets and Eric Miyeni were fired from their jobs for something similar.

Exactly, we wouldn't have heard anything.

The word has such a massive stigma to it, which is a bit silly if you think about it. If you really want to insult someone badly you can use it for any race under the sun.
 
Ouch...well the fact that he used the word is undoubtedly going to cause the whole thing to stick like glue.

I must say I have never heard it being used in an offensive way. I'm not sure of the origin of the word or the original meaning for that matter. But if I break it down using Zulu grammar this is what I get :-
um - suffix denoting person
lungu - member

It has the same Bantu origins as the KiSwahili 'Mzungu' which means, 1) white person ; 2) Something wonderful, startling, surprising, ingenuity, cleverness, a feat, a trick, a wonderful device.

umlungu is a white person and not necessarily a white English speaking person only. An Afrikaans white speaking person is ibhunu because he speaks isibhunu and a English speaking person will be considered ingisi because he speaks Isingisi and so forth and so forth but all of them are abelungu because they white.

I had heard previously that umlungu was a word also used for the white, dirty scum that blows in off the waves during storms on the east coast. I had also hear it meant "father of light", no doubt the former reflecting an element of dislike for the white man, and the latter perhaps advocated even by a white man with missionary vision. Neither of these had I ever heard substantiated or supported with any great enthusiasm.

I do not think that the white people should be offended by the term 'umlungu' because it is often used with affection when we like them. Our children will call the ones they like by the term umlungu wami. Forget the scum of the sea idea.
