Article: Die Stem fight

I would say that Steve Hofmeyr achieved what he wanted to by singing the old anthem:
Liberal uproar, lots of condemnations and free publicity
Conservative support, more fans and money in the bank

What does annoy me is that I feel he doesn't need the money/publicity/etc. Why do this in order to milk the bitter Afrikaner and create the drama around it? He has the influence and popularity to be a change champion and steer his generally bitter and racist supporters out of the past, which they desperately cling to, and into the future.

He sees himself as the Afrikaner's Braveheart.
What I do notice is that he is surrounded and associated with people who are borderline extremist, whereas he himself does not voice or portray the same extremist views. Unfortunately it is the only way Afrikaans pop-artists seem to be able to make a buck nowadays and why they hang out in certain areas of Gauteng, as well as the "stads-kerk-en-skoolsale" of "dorpies" similar to those Gauteng areas all over the country.

Someone said on Twitter that he probably wants to get himself labelled as 'Die Stem' :p

STEVE TO INCLUDE 'DIE STEM' ON NEW ALBUM

Singer Steve Hofmeyr plans to include a section of "Die Stem" on his latest album due for release in September, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

"It was purely by request," said Hofmeyr who faced controversy after he sang it at the Innibos festival in Mbombela earlier this year.

He plans to sing it with only a guitar as accompaniment, adding the audience -- "all 40,000 of them" -- who sang it with him at Innibos towards the end.

Asked whether he was doing it to annoy his critics or for his fans to sing along at home, he said "both".

It will be the third in his "Toeka" (the past) series, which has sold 350,000 copies already and will fit in with the series's theme of nostalgia, he said.

"I am just sorry I could not track Neelsie [CJ Langenhoven] himself down for a duet," he quipped, referring to the composer of South Africa's apartheid-era national anthem.

He is planning another release which will include the complete "Die Stem" and "Ken jy die Land", the anthem of the independent Boer republic, also known as the national anthem of the Transvaal, and "Suikerbossie".
