Article: Die Stem fight

Since we have so many languages, an anthem without lyrics.

Does it really matter what language, really? Honestly I would prefer an anthem in 1 language, whatever that is as long as it is genuinely South African and not some knock off's from the past.

People in this country need to take the carrot out their arse and stop being so stuck up and look forward not backwards.

People like Steve can pull their bakkies in a laager and sing the stem all they want while they shun the new South Africa.

Didn't Slipknot cause Satanism in Krugersdorp a few years ago?

I honestly don't see why a country needs an anthem, it sounds to cult-like. Anthem, sportsteam, flags etc.

As for die stem, yes I do sing it or the old transvaal anthem (which I reckon is an awesome song) from time to time, but honestly it is a bloody song people ought to grow up a bit.

2 Things.
1. That is a beautiful song, and as much part of my history as 'Lethu Mshini Wami'. And if it is 'banned' or marginalised - I'll be front of the line singing it in public.
and 2. It can also be sung to the tune of 'Die Padda wou gaan opsit by sy nooi in die vlei. I'd like to see any other anthem beat that.

i have strange opinion on Die Stem.

i have always disliked it when it was our national anthem, yet i like our current national anthem - i seems to invoke some feeling of pride in me when i hear it sung at international sporting events (or any event) - which "Die Stem" never ever did for me.

however, our flag (current) leaves me stone cold - to me (me opinion only) it appears a little simplistic, perhaps infantile.

Just heard Brasil national anthem. Our anthem is perfecto. Theirs sounded like a nursery rhyme

Well its about time for a whole new anthem actually.
To hell with the stem and nkosi

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is hardly unique and we are the 3rd country currently using it as an anthem.

We need something of our own if you want to build unity.

Time to move on people.

mmm. True. We seem to lack national identity.
Hell we even have major roads named after leaders from other african countries. Is that the norm?

Weird, I have never heard someone say that, but I can understand it as God is mentioned.

Nkosi does not mean God as you are led to believe. It means Ruler or King. They just said it means God to smooth it over with white afrikaners and make the new anthem acceptable to non-blacks.

Lord, bless Africa
May her horn rise high up
Hear Thou our prayers
And bless us.

Chorus

Descend, O Spirit
Descend, O Holy Spirit

I think we can safely say Nkosi refers to a deity in this instance - after all it was originally a hymn.

I never sing the current national anthem as it pays a tribute to african forefathers. That is offensive to many south africans...

Eh? The translated lyrics of the original are all god-bothering, nothing to do with african forefathers:
Lord, bless Africa
May her spirit rise high up
Hear thou our prayers
Lord bless us, Lord bless us.

Lord, bless Africa
May her spirit rise high up
Hear thou our prayers
Lord bless us
Your family.

Chorus

Descend, O Spirit
Descend, O Holy Spirit
Lord bless us
Your family.

Freedom of speech? OR does that only apply to songs about machine guns?

Sadly everything attached to the past of whites is being removed. It is happening in schools in history and other subjects.

The Govt say it is a LEGACY of the past yet they celebrate 1976 riots? Contradictory all the times.
It is as if the whites have contributed nothing to this country.

Well I suppose it is better to "have contributed nothing" than "f**ked" everything us as they doing.

Die stem is a beautiful poem written well before apartheid. Its a pity that some people uses/used it to oppress. I think that is the issue with this. You can not tell me, majority of the "white/afrikaners" who sings it, sings it because its a beautiful song. Most times it is sung to remind them of the good old days, when the whites were baas and the blacks were labourers.

Also, it does not mean certain people singing nkosi sikileli, doesn't sing it to remind them of their fight against apartheid. Like someone else mentioned earlier, maybe it is time for a new anthem, although I like the current format of our anthem, grew attached to it and proud of it due to sport etc.
