Article: Free universities from 2011: Sasco

Damn these people are thick. University is a priviledge not a right. Also the goverment is already paying for students who can't pay to go to school and we can hardly cope as it is so how will they fund this. It will also cause there to be a shortage of professors campuses etc. and the level of the degrees will be down-graded dramaticly.

Stupid Stupid Stupid but can we expect anything better?

Do they support free education in Afrikaans classes? (it was SASCO who wanted all Afrikaans schools to be closed last year)!

Well, it wouldn't be _free_. You'd get an education, sure, but then when you get your job you'd have to start paying taxes. And taxes would then fund free education.

SASCO has the glimmerings of a point. All that money wasted by inefficiency, arms deals, World Cup stadiums and general arseholianism could definitely be put to much better use providing free education to all - which would benefit us all.

Well how about they start with grade 1-12. When they have that running semi properly they can talk about free tertiary education. Otherwise its just more money down the drain.

I've seen what goes on in the universities currently, and until the culture of "we demand" disappears a concept like this has sweet FA chance of even being vaguely sustainable.
 
Yay free university so that everyone can get their BA degrees and still end up unemployable!! Viva!!
 
Despite their misguidedness, I agree with them that more people in SA need access to better and higher forms of education. However, I dont think free university tickets are the answer - we need to first fix the primary and high school systems, and make sure that learners of any age can at least get a good matric and be prepared for the world.

Right now most underprivileged students dont really get a good education because of lack of materials and trained teachers, so when they get to varsity, they struggle. Thats why we need to sort basic schooling out first.

Agreed, given the government pays for 60% of the tuition fees already... I think they are putting their heads out enough. Furthermore, you'll create a 'stagnation' of people who just fail everything and re-enroll every year... in about 5-6 years the universities will be filled with old people, preventing anyone else from entering :p. I really think the price for tuition fees is fair... I pay R30 000 a year, and that's for engineering... Also, tuition fees make kids work, especially when their parents are on their backs about how much it costs.

More focus should be on the primary/secondary schooling systems ffs. If we can get 80% matric pass rate, with more stringent exams/syllabus , have more universities built to accommodate these matrics, then and only then will be have a system where you can look at the situation where you can say well maybe lets make uni fee, but under extreme terms and conditions (it's only fee until you fail a year/subject, if you don't fail, then shweet, if you do fail, toughies, you pay the full un-subsidized amount)
 
I'm a UNISA student and I support free tertiary education. I could not study in '94 as we had no cash, hec I was threatened of being kicked out of High School as my Dad could not afford the school fees.

@scotty777: Your making some good points about "old people" filling up spots.
 
Hey, they are ENTITLED to it!

So once again the White Majority who actually have jobs and pay taxes will be funding the rest of South Africa who DEMAND free university.

As if supporting the 25% unemployed fools sitting on their naught wasn't enough.

Yeah. It would be nice if some black people could get themselves educated enough to start contributing to the tax base as well...

Yup! And maybe if more people were educated, and more people were contributing to the tax base, we'd have cheaper universities.

Again, why don't they just apply for a state loan from NSFAS, one that they have to PAY BACK when they start working?

Why should anyone be handed free education, something that 99% of the people will throw away if it's free?

When you have to work your backside off for something, you treasure it and you make sure that you take full advantage of it.

Give free education and 99% will drop out in their first year. (wasting oppertunities for even more, as there are a limited number of classrooms, lecturers, etc)
Give loans and bursaries that must be worked or paid back and less will drop out.
