Article: Gauteng tolls too complex: DA

You'd be surprised at how effective government is at installing ways and means of collecting income ;)

No worries there - let them send the bill and proof that it was my vehicle using the toll road. We've seen how good some areas of government are in billing (CoJ).

Ja, with our luck you will get a bill for R280,000.00 :D

That's how the Joburg billing system works.

1 in 6 number number plates fake

One in every six number plates affixed to vehicles in Gauteng is fake, the provincial legislature heard on Monday.

Some people are in for a nasty shock with fines and toll fee demands for vehicles not belonging to them.

Lol, but surely they'll supply a picture of your car too?

I think this system will be in place for year at most, then someones going to update the system and it'll crash. They the ANC will blame the DA ;).

WHY FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD DO PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE TOLL ROADS?!?!?!?!

It's pretty simple, I don't agree with their prices nor the fact that they are there. It's pretty simple if you apply normal ecconomics. No one use the toll roads, no funds are collected, they drop the price. They will keep dropping it till people start using it. How is that so hard to understand.

Just don't use them if the price bothers you. It's pretty simple logic :D

You say that like there is a viable alternative. You do realise that the back roads do not have 4 lanes like the highways have?

Are you saying there is no alternative?
Are you guys thinking about what you are saying before you even press submit?

So you would not get up 30 minutes earlier and drive an alternative route? But you want to complain?

I can do nothing but laugh a little at you guys whining but not upto the task at hand. It's like saying the ANC is crap but you don't vote. The logic in here fails me.

EVERYONE will be using alternative routes. Highways are designed multiple lanes wide to handle heavy traffic. Backroads aren't.

Yea everyone should drive alternate routes. There is no reason we cant squeeze all the traffic from a 4 lane highway into a single lane back road that is plagued by potholes as it is. Awesome thinking batman!

Perhaps another alternative would be me taking my laptop, cellphone and wallet onto a taxi to Sandton. Lets roll the dice and see if i make it to work alive.

Are you saying there is no alternative?

No, I said there is no viable alternative. Sure there are back roads... which are already very much under strain. How are you going to fit all the traffic from the highways onto those little single lane roads? There aren't even enough hours in the day to do that. The back roads will be grid-locked from 2 am until 10 pm at night.

Um, I think you are lacking a basic understanding of simple physics here. Go and take all the water from your bathtub and try and empty it using a chain of straws running out the bathroom and into the toilet.

Um, I don't actually have to travel on ANY highways to get to work. It's the people who will be getting off the highways to use my route that will be a bother to me.
my road will be clogged up now, because of your suggestion. Way to go, Champ.

Come on Gary. People drive these alternative routes DAILY!!!. You are trying to justify the alternative as not viable to yourself. You know that. There isn't 1 road between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Just of the top of my head I can name you 7. 7 roads not all single lane, but let's say 7 single lanes which in turn is actually more than the 4 on the N1 isn't it? O and that excludes the ones I don't know of. Come on mate, seriously, are you being this difficult on purpose? Because I know for a fact you are smarter than this.

 are you in JHB?

The thing you are forgetting is that ALL of those alternative routes are already at capacity. Putting ALL of the traffic onto back roads that already carry a significant amount of traffic is just not going to work.

Have you ever seen what an intersection on a side road looks like because all the traffic has been diverted off a highway due to an accident or temporary closure? Now imagine that at ALL the intersections on ALL the backroads in Gauteng. It's just not going to work.

And what happens when there is a blockage up on one road, or an accident? You can't divert traffic around it like you do on a highway. It just blocks the entire road. Then the intersections around the accident get blocked, then you have gridlock.

Seriously, I think you need to talk to some traffic management specialists here. Cos your idea is seriously naive.

so what is your "alternative" if you don't use the N1?

Depends on where I need to be.

R511 to Sandton
N14 to the Westrand
Old Johannesburg road to Johannesburg central

If you need to know a specific area not covered let me know :p
