Article: Gauteng tolls too complex: DA

All a knock on affect of the fact that SANRAIL is so screwed (The actual South African Rail services). If the trains were running like they used to there would be less trucks on the roads. In the past big distribution warehouses had railway tracks leading into their yards. But around 1997 they just stopped using them.

Where are people getting this SANRAIL name from?

IT is SANRAL .... the South African National Roads Agency Limited

Their website is here.

They have nothing to do with Trains or Rail.

I personally bought a house close to work and central to Pretoria and Jhb now I travel 10 min to work and I don't have to pay R600 per month on toll fees and I'm also saving about R600 on petrol. But I think employers must realize that if an employee can work from home they should encourage it. The whole 8-5 thing is so 20th century...

I've been saying the same thing about telecommuting for ages. It's not like remote access to the company network is difficult to arrange.

I think it's all about showing face - they want to ensure that you you do 8 hours, not realising that it doesn't make you work any harder. We need to move away from hour-based work to delivery-based work.

4 single lane roads is not the same as one road with 4 parallel lanes. Imagine you get stuck behind a truck on a single lane road doing 20 km/h. 1 km behind the truck, traffic would be at a standstill. Add in a few robots and it all translates into a nightmare.

Also, with the amount of congestion that the alternative routes are likely to take - how do you suppose that they would be able to afford constant maintenance on these roads? Maintenance translates into construction work, meaning that the single lane road is likely to be blocked for the duration of the repair, making the traffic even worse.

Waking up 30 minutes earlier to take an alternative route will therefore accomplish very little. In all likelihood, realistically you're looking at waking up 90-120 minutes earlier. So it's either wake up at 4:30am to get to work on time, or pay the exorbitant toll fees. Both options seem like very poor ones to me.

I personally think that property prices in Jhb are likely to soar as people look to start moving closer to work. If there was ever a good time to invest in property, I think it would be now.

Again, I can not understand how you people can be so closed minded

You are presenting me with problems of which each and everyone has a solution which still excludes having to use the N1. I'm not saying you are wrong on any of your points, I am however saying that there is a solution to each and every point you bring up. If you can't see that then I'm sorry.

I thought this is why they add tax to petrol, the more you drive the more you pay. This is just another way that Africa wants to be first world, but with 3rd World Leaders. The system works in England cause they have alternative transport available. Guess its a way to force people on the white elephant Guatrain, that we just had to have.

If we do not stop it now, then it will spread to rest of the country

Why the hell are we paying 14% VAT on the bloody toll charge? Taxing a tax.. That's not Ayoba.
