Article: Kurt Darren defends performing at Zuma inauguration

Afrikaans singer Kurt Darren defended his decision to perform at President Jacob Zuma's inauguration in an open letter on Tuesday after a rightwing backlash.

"I was on that stage to represent my culture as an Afrikaans-speaking South African," he wrote.

Cool story, bro!

At least have the balls to say you did it for the money.

"I was on that stage to represent my culture as an Afrikaans-speaking South African," he wrote.

You were on that stage because you chose money over principles, and henceforth, with good conscience, no longer have the unbiased right to criticise the current regime. Period.

I couldn't be bothered to watch the farce, but Google informs me that you sang a cover of Vulindlela, which YouTube is currently playing on this here PC...I have yet to hear any Afrikaans in it. Hypocrite.

I'm no fan and he almost certainly did it for money. But why the absurd backlash ?

Here's an idea. If more effort was made by Afrikaans white people to integrate with their fellow country men then I'm 100% sure they could go a great way towards being a group that is well liked, rather than often times loathed by the majority. We don't need a camp fire kumbuya rendition, but just a little less of that old school "#*%% julle #@$$!&^$" and "#@$$!^ boetie" as rendered by this backlash.

Of course he is a professional musician. Music is what pays his bills not some arbitrary principles.
He is not the only one either. What with so many Afrikaners that are currently working for the government? In the Army, Police, Eskom, Transnet, SAA etc. Are they also hypocrites and cannot criticise the government just because they work for it? People need to grow up.

We had black people working as civil servants for the Apartheid state and that didn't take away their rights to oppose and speak out against the evil that was Apartheid.

You know, I have been pondering this same thing for a while now but how do you want white people to do that when their jobs are being taken or they cant get a job because they are white? No promotion because you are white etc.

Its like telling blacks to forget about apartheid. Its a **** circle we find ourselfs in.

I have not once struggled to get a job because of BEE. I agree a few years back it was bad for people to lose their Jobs to make space for BEE. However, as of late the BEE actually favours white people even more so white woman. This is a myth everyone keeps on hammering about. Sure you might need to look harder to find a Job, if you are the right person for the job you'll get it.

For whatever reason he did it I, I think it's immature to go hating on him. Disagree yes, but some of the things being said about him makes me think the haters are no better than Zuma himself, peas in the same pod.

If Kurt Darren really wanted to troll his fans then the first track on his next album should be.

"Umshini wami"

with backup vocals by JZ. :D

LOL! *BAM!*
I think Kurt just found out who his target audience really was all these years.

Guy must be a real deluded dumbass if he thought the kind of music and lyrics he produces are consumend by the more "progressive" Afrikaners out there.
