Article: Kurt Darren defends performing at Zuma inauguration

But if asked by your colleagues why you did it, would you concoct some story about "representing the Afrikaaner culture or whatever" or just tell the truth and say you did it for the paycheck?

Are you fk'ng joking? How is doing electrical work cultural? Afrikaans music is a culture thing. Might not like his songs or him for that matter, Afrikaans music is a big thing in Afrikaans culture. You guys seen any of the Afrikaans Music fests?

So he also felt proud to sing at the presidents inauguration and felt he brought a bit of white Afrikaner into the festivities, who is anybody to argue against how he feels about it. It's not like he needs the money and so he could have turned it down but he didn't so maybe he also felt that it would give a bit more White South African flair into proceedings.

Anyway it seems a lot of the hatred and disgusting comments he received were even before he came out to explain his actions, so in all honesty no matter what he said he still would have been flamed.

Regardless of what his motives for doing the gig, his statement is wrong.

SA has historically been, still is and probably will for a long time to come still be a race driven/divided country.

Maybe he should just stick to singing.

He would have gotten flamed whatever he said. 'I did it for the money'......'You whore....and betrayer of your people'

He's a singer, not the general secretary of the UN, or the president of a country..... I think people are stupid to actually to take anything these people say seriously

Why do so many, once they emit a glimmer of fame, decide to enter politics, philantrophy or some such activity? Singers sing, actors act and politicians...talk *****.

The Nationalist identity hasn't yet left the Afrikaaners.

Far from it. They cling to it desperately. Someone should tell them that their are far more benefits to being a modern "world citizen" than clinging to some archaic sense of "culture" that mostly involves brandy, khaki shirts and hating everyone else.

:p

Exact same can be said for African culture if you're honest, it's just the apparel that differs ..

I think most young black people in this country apsire to be modern and western and only practice their culture reluctantly to appease their elders. That's how it seems to me, but I don't proclaim to speak for them.

And maybe it's only because I know a lot of young Afrikaans kids it's that I notice there is still a deep level of indoctrination that teaches distrust and hatred for everyone not Afrikaans. However I admit to also knowing vast amounts of exceptions of course.
