Article: Lance Armstrong Oprah Winfrey interview a hit

I haven't seen the whole program but my conception of this whole thing is this:

It happens a lot in cycling. Because they have brought it on themselves, the cyclists and the organizers of cycling. They have made cycling a brutal sport. Much more than most others. The pain you experience in cycling is immense.

When you experience this pain long enough you will search for ways to give yourself a competitive advantage.

When you listen to his words to Oprah and to the recordings when he was lying it sounds exactly the same. This man comes across (to me) as a serial liar ... as if a part of his brain is just dead and doesn't give a damn. I honestly think he needs to undergo psycho testing. Something with this guy's brain is not right. He's dead inside.

If he didn't become a cold-blooded serial cyclist he would have become a cold-blooded killer. I see that in him. The sort of guy that will get a job at SOG. No conscience that prevents him from doing whatever is required to get a job done. I genuinely would like a psychiatrist to give an opinion on this guy.

You see that?

I saw him being remorseful. Should he have sobbed like a baby? Or cut his wrists?
Our politicians do more harm and is more cold blooded when apologizing...

Your post and the things you say confirms my post 100%.

Cycling have become so brutal that participation have had the effect of twisting your brains sense of ethicality and even morailty.

And not trying to diminish his accountibility ... I'm just trying to rationalize a human-like behaviour (right or wrong).

Or once he got into the lie he just had to keep it going.

I'm not sure he has gained anything by fessing up.

Didn't seem sorry beyond saying the words. Think the interview showed that he is hurting more from being found out than being a disgrace to the sport. It also wasn't completely free and open; a lot of the more interesting topics were either rushed through or he didn't want to go into great detail which kind of left you wondering what he was covering up. I also found the other recordings that were shown of him and his current 'confession' to be almost the same; which makes me skeptical on how truthful he was this time around.

In the end he will probably sell a book and possibly a movie deal and come out okay. He still seems to have a lot of fanboys so I don't think he will ever, truly, be put to account for the cheat he is/was.

Love how everyone is saying he is a disgrace to the sport... Seriously? He is the poster boy for cycling. EVERYONE of them are doping. Why the big fuzz? He competed against doppers and won them 7 times in the TdF :p

he is an inspiration to drug users everywhere!

I'm not sure why Lance is being persecuted as it seems very likely that most world class athletes are using performance enhacing substances. I doubt that Phelps or Bolt are clean when you consider that they have both comfortably broken records that have been set by confirmed drug cheats.

What if I use substances in the off season to increase my skill but stop a while before the season starts.

That should keep me negative regarding any tests, yet still provide me with much benefit.

This is basically what most professional athletes do.

I don't know if any endurance drugs would help a short distance sprinter and Bolt isnt the most muscular sprinter so I don't know what he could have taken to make him faster. And both haven't been tested positive before like Armstrong and look how advanced his doping program was.

The man is a narcissist. Many super athletes have some kind of "dysfuntional personality trait" that assists and motivates them to perform at the peak of their sport. With or without drugs he was an amazing athlete, although ultimately a flawed one.

/armchair psychology off :D
