Article: Lexus driver arrested for speeding

I don't always drive at the speed limit, but I do try to keep traffic flowing. The difference though is that extreme speeding is a real danger. There's absolutely no good reason to average 199 given the condition of our roads and our poorly trained drivers.

What does average mean to you in the context of this article? You make it sound as if he always drives more or less 199, but it actually is the method of speed testing, average speed between two points. How far from each other are these points?

People near me steal and murder - does that make it okay for me to do ?

How you equate speeding in a clearly safe situation to robbery and murder is beyond me? Speed kills, they say. Yeah, right, and here I am merrily driving at the speed limit when some moron in a taxi sideswipes me. I don't speed when I am putting other people in danger - only when it is safe. I also slow down for intersections, so when I am endangering other people's lives is beyond me.

LOL at all the holier-than-thou forumites here. Nobody ever done 100 in a 60 zone?

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. I have been in JHB on many occasions and been basically forced to break the speed limit because if I drive at the speed limit, I'll never get into the lane I want to be in.

I assume it means the average speed between two points. The article doesn't mention the distance so I'm not sure. But in order to average 199, it means that he would have to have driven faster at some points and slower at others, and again there's no indication of what the variance is between the two extremes. It's still irresponsible if there were other cars around, because they too may not be well trained in reacting to speeding cars.

If you want to speed then that's fine, but keep it reasonable and relative to traffic flow. If the road is empty then go ahead, but as soon as there is the possibility of passing another car, slow down and be reasonable.

+1

Nobody ever does 100 in a 60 zone here, apparently. That must mean they always drive 60 in a 60 zone, no?

Are you a product of our new schooling ?

What about 61km/ph, 65km/ph, even 70km/ph ?

I thought speeding is speeding, not so? It's hilarious how everyone makes such a stink about one guy doing 199, on a national road.

Yeah, they closed the road for more than 2hrs. A lot of people turned back towards Kroonstaad via Welkom. Actually went past two accidents on that road

We thought it was road works, and then we couldn't work out why people were doing om keers? After about 20 minutes we figured we'd follow them, then took a long detour on the farm roads.
