Article: Local Elections on 18 May

Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe has announced that the Local Government Elections will be held on 18 May.

"After consultation with the Electoral Commission, government has set the date for the Local Government Elections as 18 May 2011,' he said during a sitting of the National Council of Provinces today.

Why not on a weekend? That way the taxpaying portion of the population might actually get to vote too...

Oh, wait, that might not be too good for them, they prefer the unemployed masses that live on handouts to get the most say.

Oh no, you mean you might have to take a day's leave or go to a voting station early before work or even after work. Their cunning plan to stop you voting is already falling into place. The horror.

It's normally deemed a holiday isn't it?
Usually yes. But back in the days before they did that we went before work, or sometimes after.

I think there's too many voters now to process before and after work. Not even sure if 1 day is sufficent. For the metro's and large towns yes but some of the rurals walk kms to get to stations.

What difference...

When I used to vote it made f0kk0l difference... today I sit with unstable electricity that can go out at any minute, incessant water cuts and crime... and I cannot complain, even if I voted, it still won't make 011-375-5555 operational!

I urge all of you to vote, stop bitching and get off your asses and make the difference

I threatened my sister last night. Said if she does not go register to vote this weekend I will not speak to her anymore! And the best part is...I can look up her ID number on the system and check on the IEC website if she really did register! Brother is watching china! :-)

So you're effectively voting for the people responsible for that then. We use a proportional system, so your vote does count. Anyway you can't complain if are not at least making an effort.

Did we have as many voting stations? Besides I wouldn't go so far as to call Parow rural (and I was primarily addressing the claim that making it a working day was part of an ANC plot, made by someone who has Parow listed as their location). There certainly are plenty of voting stations in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town and they open early in the morning. Maybe making making it difficult for rural people to vote is part of the ANC's evil scheme to stop them voting for the ANC.

Because the middle class (not the masses mind you) use weekends for shopping... you do it on a weekend and they'd all rather go suntanning. The date is picked in a way that doesn't tempt people to take long weekends off to the beach instead of getting off their asses & visiting a polling station.

And it's the tax paying portion you speak of here that's being accommodated.

I strongly agree with one thing though... why not on a weekend?
I don't for one minute buy the spiel about people making it a long weekend.

One working day lost has negative consequences on our economy either way you look at it. I know I will be working that day as our company has just battered the recession and we cannot afford to have nobody working that day.

So I should spend one of my leave days on voting? Wonderful.

Don't get me wrong, I will vote, but it just annoys me how everything is biased towards the majority of the voting population, not towards the minority that actually pay the tax. How many of you can really afford to just drop work for a day? Or even half a day?

It would be great if it is a public holiday :)

Thinking about it now, by law you must present a doctors certificate if you are sick for 2 or more days, or before or after a weekend or public holiday. So a Wednesday is perfect, just put in one days sick leave! :D

Best time of the year..... All the roads with potholes near me have been fixed :D

Because the idiots use weekends for drinking, sleep on the pavement like dead bodies. (visit any of your local parks, it is not difficult to find out. :D)

anc will lose ... simple.

Why do you sleep in a park? ANC take your stuff already? Shame.

You could use this chance to beat & hurt the system at the same time! Every of of those tax paying complainers - take a days unpaid leave for:
1. Go & vote - beat/change the system!
2. Taking unpaid leave as a form of protest - say its ungainst the forth coming creation of new toll station. You can only hurt a (any) Government, financially - where it matters most! In their pockets! If 2 million people/companies/vat/duties don't pay a days tax! That will hurt the Government in the best way!
You don't have the masses to beat them in a vote game - so change the rules of the game!

FFS why not the 16th or the 20th ????

Then we could have ANOTHER long weekend!

Why all the bitching? After all, we are the most productive country in all of Africa and have a first world economy with the most stable currency in the world!

Not.

Unfortunately SARS hurts us back much much worse and they eventually get the money, so, sorry, bad suggestion that!
