Lived in California for quite a bit and never noticed "smoking restaurants". The proposed legislation is pretty standard all over the developed world.

It is a rare pleasure going to a bar or club in the States and not coming back smelling like a cigarette factory. I fully support the legislation. By all means smoke, but if I have to smell or inhale any of that smoke in a communal place then that is NOT acceptable. Second hand smoke is just as dangerous if not more than first hand.

You are permitted teabreaks. No one stops you from leaving your desk for that.

No, what's not acceptable is forcing restaurant and pub owners to discriminate against smokers. If there was any fairness to any of this there would be smoking pubs or non smoking pubs or pubs with smoking areas and we'd all have the choice as consenting adults to choose where to go.

i am a smoker but don't smoke in my car or house.

i agree no smoking in public areas. i don't want to inhale second hand smoke. i smoke away from other people. i also do not drop my cigarette butt on the floor. i squish it out and make sure i put it in a bin. i can't stand it when smokers do this, they just drop their cigarette butts on the floor. if i go to a restaurant where there is a smoking or non smoking area, i always choose the non smoking area. i don't want to smell of cigarette smoke. i smoke vogue slims, very mild cigarettes.

A buddy and I were actually discussing smoking-only restaurants, where non-smokers were not welcome. I imagine they'd cry discrimination then.

Anyway I'm not sure how they can classify restaurants, pubs and bars as "public spaces" - surely it is private property and therefore any smoking rules is at the owner's discretion?

Because look how well that turned out with drugs. Banning something doesn't make it go away, it just introduces further criminal elements.

We have wonderful balconies with benches, but non smokers cannot sit there because the smokers are constantly polluting the air and the smell from the ashtray is REVOLTING.

How does a smoker smoking in a smoking area impact your health when you are more than welcome in a non-smoking area?

I know people that smoke that are very considerate, they go outside to smoke, even outside they don't smoke near people, they don't smoke in their own houses, cars or near their kids.
