Article: New smoking rules not well received

Yeah ban and do the same to alcohol and see how many of the rule makers get caught on that one!!!

CONCENTRATE ON CRIME YOU IDIOTS!!!

How is your health affected in a designated smoking area? Are you being forced sit there?
If not forced to use such areas, many (if not most) smokers light up without regard for others.

I think we've passed that point now. Smokers know where to light up, you're not going find one puffing away while you're prancing around a mall. This call to ban smoking is nothing more than self-righteousness.

Ridiculous ! I think they should just mention places where people Can smoke ..if there are any left..
Bars and restaurants will loose Loads of Business due to this new law.

This truly has gone to far now.

One of the first things you notice when walking into the airport after landing in SA is that waft of putrid smoke filled air drifting around.
Here in Aus (and I think Ireland was the leader on this), you cannot smoke in any public area.
It is illegal to smoke in your own car when there are kids in it...it is no use asking people not to do it because smokers don't care, you have to make it illegal.
It is illegal to smoke in any public open space (parks, football fields etc) where there could be kids, even if there are no signs.

To smoke- or want to smoke- in restaurants while having food, is not only filthy behaviour, it is also disrespectful. Society needs to stamp it out if people don't have common sense.

It is quite easy for this to become accepted practise and restaurants and pubs are not suffering from this because it is all on a level playing field.

It is also illegal- punishable by a fine even if you are reported by another driver- to flick your cigarette butt out of your car window.

BTW, we are also about to introduce 'plain paper packaging'. In other words every pack will look exactly the same -brown- with no distiguishable branding or advertising on it. The only 'advertising' on it will be the grotesque health warnings.
The big cigarette companies squealed and screamed, court challenges etc--tough luck, the govt just passes more laws to cover any loop holes in constitution.
Wait until that hits South Africa.

Non-smokers also seem to not know that quite a bit of money is made from taxing smokers.

That argument is simply not true. In Australia the % of people smoking is amongst the lowest in world and the price of cigarettes due to taxes is amongst the highest. Yet smoking is much more of a burden on the health system than the money generated from taxes.
So in SA with more smokers, much cheaper prices and no universal health care, it must be a huge impost on health care and society.

Why are Saffers so reluctant to move with the times? You knock the govt - as you should - when they are corrupt etc, but you also knock them when they drag society into the first world look after their citizens and save the country money.

Sheesh, all you nanny stater's , bet you were all bumbed when the former CCCP died. Just remember, when a so called democracy starts to restrict its citizens that is the start towards tyranny, wonder how you would all feel if government decided there are too many children in SA and you now need a license to have kids. Judging from some of the comments on this forum you all would love that idea.

those of you saying that "businesses will suffer" well its complete garbage. people jumping on the bandwagon here when the truth of the matter is that restaurants know that people dont smoke WHILE they eating. Additionally, the amount of people that DONT smoke far outweigh the people that DO... So non-smokers cotton on that a good restaurant has got their priorities right then if anything they will get more business. not less.

good example is maestro's in milnerton. top notch restaurant with awesome sea views and good food at reasonable prices (for cape town). People bitched and moaned when they converted their bar section (with the TV's for sports) into a no smoking area. Obviously business improved coz then they converted their outside deck area also to a no smoking area.

So now the main restaurant, bar area and deck are no smoking areas. I was there last week, and on Father's day. It was PACKED.

So please when you say businesses will die, I call BS

So as consenting adults we have the option to choose to smoke marijuana and snort cocaine?

Stupid analogy because we have the right to smoke just not to allow others to do so in our own establishments. But ja, actually, would should have the right to put whatever we want into our bodies.

The point I was trying to make is what's the difference between cigarettes and weed? or Cocaine and alcohol?

They are all bad, just some are more socially acceptable than others. To me, the same rules that apply to marijuana should apply to cigarettes. One or the other has to change.

We are already a nanny state!

Can't go any speed we want
Can't talk on our cellphones in the car
Can't buy heroin (and heroines for other pleasures...) from our local store

My life long dream of speeding on the (toll free) N1, on my cellphone ordering my heroin from my rent-a-heroine is being crushed!!!

Curse this nanny state!

What's next, no drinking in public places??? How is social gatherings ever gonna be the same???

Hectic how much you wanna control other people! Who you ganna go after once you have subverted the smokers? No booze in restaurants? :)

Good idea. Get all the drunks off the road. Make then eat, drink and smoke at home.

How is your health affected in a designated smoking area? Are you being forced sit there?
No, but I am forced to ride the train, share the meeting room etc etc with those people smelling like smoke. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third-hand_smoke

So please when you say businesses will die, I call BS
Agreed.
50% of the time I go to a restaurant I have to wait for a non smoking table to become available. Business will do fine without smokers.
As will life in general.

Its been illegal for decades, as a business you need a liquor licence to sell and to allow patrons to drink on your premises.

When more and more aswipe laws get done. The government is fugging up badly. Bend over dear citizens and get fugged properly in the azz.

+ a billion...

It's not the law that irks me, it's policing it that does.

If we were a crime free nation with a competent police force sitting on its bum looking for something to do, then by all means.

But with rampant violent crime, do our courts and police force really need the burden of catching and prosecuting smokers???!!!!

Just more backwards rational.
