Article: Numsa dumps ANC

Numsa has crossed a Rubicon - not by dumping the ANC but by as a major trade union espousing the principle that its members political affiliations are a matter of individual conscience.

If this actually happens it would be great.

We will see an ANC/DA alliance in the future. I know some people won't like it, but you can't allow the ANC to ally with the extreme left.

That will only happen if they're both minority parties.. it will not happen when either one is the majority party in the country.

Yeah, obviously. That's my entire point. And by minority I mean under 50% of the vote. Not less than some other party.

However this turns out, the ANC quest for a 2/3 majority is fading away.

Definitely. But I think that a lot of NUMSA members will STILL vote ANC.
They have not been told to NOT vote for the ANC.
They have just been told that NUMSA as a body will not be directly supporting the ANC.
The individual members though can now vote for whoever they want to.

No, as in minority and not able to mean anything even in a coalition.

The DA and the ANC are too far apart in implementation to actually work together in even a semblance of harmony.

Sorry every time I hear Irvin Jim this pops in my head

I personally think this is brilliant.

The next logical step is the creation of an actual labour party to contest elections.

No single party should have an absolute majority as this destroys accountability as experienced with the current ANC.

Minor parties the become king makers and can actually force their principles through by choosing who they support.

With the creation of a labour party the ANC is suddenly a conservative party and the DA would need to re align itself and actually define what it stands for instead of just being the "official" opposition.

Irvin Jim is playing a dangerous game. What a moron.

You call him a moron, I call him brave. Vavi on the other hand, is a hypocrite. He was at the forefront of have the charges against Zuma dropped and the Scorpions disbanded. Then the next thing he is whining about corruption, I mean, duh, what did he expect.
Anywhere, a nightmare scenario for ANC is for the opposition parties to chip away at their majority until the opposition can form a coalition which has a majority, at that point it's game on.

How did that work out in Australia in 2011? Gillard's government was crippled by the fact that anything they did would upset a coalition partner and break up their coalition. All of a sudden you have a paralysed government and no politician can do anything.

Maybe that's a good thing.

I would rather have a crippled government that's thinking about the effects it's policies may have instead of the ANC just steam rolling everything

I'm a firm supporter of minority governments, but most political parties are against it and prefer a majority coalition.

Next year: Announce support for EFF.
They would be welcomed with open arms as they share many of the EFF's polices. The EFF continues to attract a diverse supporter base who demand change.
