Article: Obama and Romney debate quotes

Too bad Ron Paul wasn't in there. He would of schooled both of these clowns.

Imo these two are just different faces of the same coin.

QFT

Both candidates going in the wrong direction (off a cliff), with each trying to sell their bad ideas.
What America needs is to go in a new direction.

Having watched the debate it's very clear Romney won. Romney was very impressive. If it happens again in the next two debates Romney could easily take the whole thing.

Except I watched it and Obama lost. The msnbc commentators were dik de moer in. I've been the biggest Romney hater till now and now I'm not so sure.

The triumph of style over substance

One of the main drawbacks to televised political theatrics is that we tend to evaluate the events in an unconstructive way. We see players on a stage, after extensive rehearsals, playing to a packed house, and we judge them as if they are actors -- who seemed "crisp" and looked "confident."

In other words, we invariably value political theater on its theatrical qualities, watching to see who knew their lines and delivered them more effectively.

By this measure, when it comes to determining who "won" last night's debate in Denver, I'd argue the conventional wisdom is right: it wasn't close. Based on style and performance, Mitt Romney did all of the things a "winning" debater is supposed to do.

Did he know his lines? Obviously, yes. Did he deliver them well? Flawlessly. I argued last week that Romney's "strength as a debater is wildly underappreciated" and "if Democrats expect Romney to falter in the debates, they're making a big mistake." Last night illustrated what I was talking about.

President Obama, meanwhile, was listless and timid. He stumbled on his words. At times he seemed distracted and unfocused. There were key opportunities for the president to go on the offensive, but for whatever reason, he chose not to engage. For pundits checking boxes -- who gave the appearance of being "in control"? -- Romney excelled.

But all of this overlooks an element I like to think it sometimes important: substance. The men on the stage last night aren't actors; they're candidates for the nation's highest office. Delivering lines well is a nice quality, but as the dust settles, it's worth pausing to reflect on whether those lines were true and reflect reality in any meaningful way.

Indeed, it seems to me Romney thrived in large part because he abandoned the pretense of honesty. And as it turns out, winning a debate is surprisingly easy when a candidate decides he can say anything and expect to get away with it.

Romney told viewers his proposed $5 trillion tax cut isn't really his proposed $5 trillion tax cut. He suggested he could eliminate a $1 trillion deficit by going after Big Bird. He said his non-existent health care plan protects those with pre-existing conditions when in reality the exact opposite is true. He cited trumped up "studies" from far-right ideologues as if they're legitimate, assuming the public won't know the difference. He said a deficit that's shrunk has actually "doubled."

And when Romney wasn't repeating falsehoods, he was furiously shaking an Etch A Sketch, rolling out yet another version of himself.

This new model -- version 8.0? 9.0? -- likes regulations of the financial industry, wants to work with Democrats, thinks his Massachusetts health care law was a great idea, and has no use for the goals of his running mate's budget plan that Romney enthusiastically endorsed. Does this in any way reflect the candidate who's been running for president the last year and a half? No, but the Republican assumes most voters won't realize and most news organizations covering the campaign won't tell them.

He might very well be right.

But as Romney and his supporters take a victory lap this morning, it's fair to note their success was a triumph for style over substance.

The absolute irony of course is that Obama's entire campaign last time around was run on style over substance :D

That seems like a sour-grapes piece to me. Obama was thumped by Romney on the issues as well.
Obama hasn't had to deal with this type campaign before (ie. actually tackling the issues), all he said last time was :"Yes we can!" and took the high road of preaching the message of hope. That won't cut it this time around. If he wants to have any chance against Romney in the debates he's gonna need to prepare, prepare, prepare and be confident enough to pull it off as well, not look like a deer caught in the headlights.

It's fun television though :D Like watching Tweedledum debating Tweedledee.

:D I can't wait for the next one.
What Obama needs to do is be confident enough to call Romney out on his lies and bull, make him look silly for trying to pass it off as the truth, but not appear arrogant and superior while doing it. While actually still being president and running the country too. That's going to be very difficult.
It's sad and telling that presidential debates have moved more towards acting and showmanship than actual debates. The public's not actually listening, they're just watching with glassy eyes. It's fascinating!

I was watching something interesting on msbc that showed that the media always reports that the Republican wins the debate (I assume this has something to do with the power of murdochs international news machine)... but in retrospect 9/10 times it was actually the democrat that won. Not saying this is what happened here, but I am careful with media reports of the debates after learning this.

It was the exact same with the Ron Paul debates during the primaries, however Fox News being the evil empire that it is, just continues to blatantly lie.

Don't worry, Obama's poor performance can probably be blamed on altitude...

And while Romney performed better in the debate, from what I saw in the actual debate and the media left-wing leaning media (lol), it lacked substance. Romney needs to up his game with regards to details of how he is going to fix the economy. All wishy washy at the moment.

Problem with debates is that they're not about what you'd do to fix things, it's what about why what your opponent wants to do, won't.

Politics, it's dirty and messy. No secret there. Politicians lie and the trick for them is to get away with it. Obama's so-called 4-trillion budget deficit fix is probably highly dubious (check between 15-20min of the debate). Romney's tax cuts to stimulate growth sounds all great and well but where are the details to hold him accountable?

It's the job of politicians to distort the truth or tell half truths so they can have wiggle room away from being held accountable. Nothing new really.

LOL love it.

I must say though, romney did well, granted he has plenty to work with :D. I am starting to doubt that obama is a sure thing.

What you reckon ghoti, romney got a chance? A big one i should say.

We should get a pole up, hint hint mods.

Yeah love Stewart's show! His bias toward the Democrats is quite obvious though, would be nice if they mix it up just a little with some Obama skits. It's a Romney / Republicans trash-fest from beginning to end, funny bad a tad monotonous. Colbert mixes it up a little.

Romney did well in the debate but I don't think its enough to swing the votes in his favour, especially with the Republicans poor run in to these elections. However if he can have a better second debate session, he may start to have a realistic chance in beating Obama because the American people in general seem very reactive to the present and tend to forget about the past few months.

Stewart has always made his fanboy status to the Democrats known and Colbert (whose show is a spinoff) was started as a supposed more republican sided one, hence why he pretends to be for the Republican agenda while taking potshots at the same time. Both of them give honest opinions though and neither of them misses an opportunity to have a go at Democrats or Republicans when its due, so I think they still try to be a little neutral.

That said, in general, the Republicans come out saying/doing the worst things because of their over-exagerrated/ridiculous views, so I guess its easier to pick on them. It also to do with their voter base being in the 'less intelligent' states which makes some of the Republican officials do strange things to gain votes.

Romney doesnt have a chance. Im not worried about that. What I am worried is how much Obama wins buy. Im hoping that the Dems win enough to break the filibuster so America can get back to work.

Stewart takes the piss outta Dems as well. He made them look silly at the DNC with the finger pointing. If a Dem is doing something stupid he highlights it as well. Just that the Republicans and Fox news give him so much more to work with.

Now if you look at his counterpart at Fox News. Bill O Reilly. He is never critical of the Republican candidate unless that candidate it out of favour with Rupert Murdoch. You will never hear him say something negative about Republican Presidents.

There is going to be a show down between O Reilly and Stewart:

Its going to be epic :D

My money is on Jon. He is very sharp. O Reilly is a bully and Jon will dance circles around him :D

Looks like its going to be awesome. Apparently Stewart and O Reilly have a pretty decent relationship, so its going to be fun to where this one goes.

In fact I was just reading this earlier:

Even when he has Republicans on his show he is nice to them

If there's one thing Mitt Romney is great at, it's outsourcing. So when the presidential candidate was prepping for the first debate, where better to outsource his zingers than the same Indian Call Center that helps Jimmy Kimmel with all of his jokes? Kimmel's so hot right now, it's a no brainer, right? And these guys are multi-talented. They also make Romney's Dockers, Halloween masks and if you're lost with Apple Maps, they've got your back.

Clearly, this is why Mitt did so well last night.
