Article: Oil will run out 100 years before a replacement is found

In 1980's we where going to run out if by 2020. I guess they found some new deposits to last another 80 years.

Anyway, we already have alternatives. Just not worth it while there is oil around. No big deal.

It seems obvious to me that investors buying shares would be putting their money into oil for now.

Its been hinted at in this thread but I believe there are very effective alternatives to oil. I also believe that they are all being patented or the patents are being bought by the oil people. They are not going to go through all the effort to make money for a hundred and fifty years or so just to watch everything collapse! No, when they have milked every last drop from the earth and made every last cent they can (and its going to get mighty expensive towards the end..) then they will suddenly make all these alternatives available. At a price of course.

Perhaps the wrong thread for your tinfoil hate conspiracy theory?

I'm going to agree with Hawker. Perhaps you should do some research into things like "climategate".

As for oil running out... it's not news. Do we have replacement for something that is used to make plastics, all sorts of medicines, fertilizer and many other crucial parts of our society besides transport... guess time will tell.

battery tech's our best bet right now. else Craig venter is going to mod algae to produce oil. edon't focus on buying additional cars right now, rather wait for the battery ones later this decade or go hybrid.

We have loads of other options besides oil. Oil just happens to be the most 'efficient' though.

A very promising alternative is the Hydrogen fuel cell, very safe, very portable but sadly not that efficient.
You use more energy breaking bonds to get the hydrogen than you get out once you bond it with oxygen.

Nuclear power is a good band aid for this problem... Until we can find more efficient ways to break the bonds.

Please excuse my ignorance but isn't coal already a viable alternative. From what I remember at the current oil prices it could compete?

Oil's been running out for a century now. In 1912 an American government and oil industry study said there was less than 25 years oil left on earth.
These latest views have the same credibility.

You chaps realise - ALL of you will be 6feet under by then :D Although I am only 17, I too will not see the end of oil. Actually, in South Africa you'll only averige 65. In case you don't know - substract your actuall age from 65 and see how much 'petrol' you have left :D A scary thought for some, yet you comment like you live for ever. Even if you are European, just because you reside in Africa, your life expectancy must be adjusted accordingly. And no, no one is special if it comes to how long you live. Sorry for the reality check . . .

thanks goodness I won't be around to witness this

interesting, so you're saying on your 65th birthday you'll just keel over and die? my grandmother lived to be 87, she must have lived in Europe then?(she lived in SA btw)

back to OT, IMHO i think the big oil companies have a trick up their sleeve, the only problem is going to be manufacturing plastics like someone said earlier.

I will be 50 when oil will "apparently" run out.

So i guess you guys must be MUCH older...

How can share prices be used to support such a statement? If we already have electric cars, how on earth will the technology not be very advanced by the time oil runs out? Also, I read somewhere that we can only access a portion of the oil in existence. New drilling techniques might mean we have oil for hundreds of years to come. Can't imagine humanity sitting around for 100 years trying to replace the primary means of powering transport. Necessity is the mother of all invention.

The International Energy Agency has released its World Energy Outlook for 2010, forecasting for the first time that the global crude oil production peak that so many have long feared, has in fact already been reached-more than four years ago. International demand has since fallen slightly thanks to a recent global economic downturn, but once economies around the world have recovered, the IEA says daily crude production alone will no longer be sufficient to meet their needs.

So is the world is headed for a Mad Max-style apocalypse? Not according the IEA. The 2010 report projects that increases in other fossil fuels like natural gas and tar sands will mostly supplant crude in meeting new demand-with clean, renewable energy sources also making major gains.

The IEA says that daily global oil production will "plateau" at around 68 million barrels per day by 2035, as total energy demand increases by more than 35 percent over the same period. Thanks in part to pledges from governments to reduce their countries' reliance on fossil fuels though, new contributions to the energy mix will help to avert the sort of catastrophic oil spike that many have predicted to coincide with the start of the " peak oil" age.

Apocalypse Later

But while the projection may bode well for the world economy, the IEA is convinced that even if governments live up to the pledges they made in lowering greenhouse gas emissions, the 2009 Copenhagen Accord's goal of limiting climate change to less than 2 degrees C will not be reached. If the world continues on its current trajectory, the organization says that average global temperatures will likely rise by at least 3.5 degrees C.

The group recommended that the following conditions must be met to achieve the Copenhagen Accord's intended outcomes, which it calls the "450 Scenario:"

- Oil demand must peak sooner and decline more sharply than it would under natural "peak oil" conditions.

- Coal will have to play a significantly smaller role in the energy balance, with global demand peaking in 2020 and declining steadily thereafter.

- Demand for gas and liquified natural gas must also also peak before the end of the 2020s.

- Renewables and nuclear power must double to represent nearly 40 percent of the energy market by 2035.

Advanced vehicles will also have to make rapid gains in the coming years-to levels in the upper reaches of what most analysts believe is possible. By 2035, the IEA says that not only will 70 percent of new worldwide vehicle sales will have to come from advance technology plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, but that that those cars will need to run mostly on electricity generated from nuclear and renewable sources rather than fossil fuels.

The IEA's Outlook is considered by many to be one of the most comprehensive and authoritative annual energy market analyses available to the public. (Though last year's report came under fire after the agency was accused in The Guardian of downplaying the severity of the impending oil crunch in an effort to not "anger the Americans.")

The IEA has worked independently with the United States and 27 other member countries to help minimize the fallout from energy market instabilities since 1974, when it was created in response to the 1973 oil crisis. Its current mandate is the promotion of what it describes as "the three E's": energy security, economic development, and environmental protection.

The world will run out of oil around 100 years before replacement energy sources are available if oil use and development of new fuels continue at the current pace, a US study warns.

In the study, researchers at the University of California, Davis (UC-Davis) used the current share prices of oil companies and alternative energy companies to predict when replacement fuels will be ready to fill the gap left when oil runs dry.
Let's wait and see.

Nah, huge money will be invested in renewable energy and prices + efficiency if those technologies will come down. The company that manages to get that right will become very very rich and powerful.
People fail to grasp the idea of the "World running Out of Oil", energy is really nothing to worry about, there are alternatives for that. What is more problematic is replacements for other oil applications such as
-Tar(used on our national roads)
-Tires(what viable& practical replacement tires for Airbus A380's wheels can you think off?)
-Car battery cases
-Motorcycle helmet
-Wire Coating
-Toilet Seats
-Curtains
-Garden Hose
-Toothbrush
-Shoes
-Combs
-Golf Balls
-Tennis Racquets
-SYNTHETIC FIBERS Polyester, nylon, and acrylic are all derived from petrochemicals. They are used for curtains, carpets, rope and even the clothes you wear
-FERTILIZERS/PESTICIDES All major commercial fertilizers are ammonia based, made from natural gas, and most commercial pesticides come from oil.
-MEDICINE (pill bottles) Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), the active ingredient in many pain reliever medicines, is manufactured from petrochemicals.
-Solar panels
-Pantyhose

humans will wipe themselves out at this rate anyway,I don't see us getting past year 2500.
Who is us? :D It is my firm believe that Homo Sapiens will make it past 2500

Global warming as a result of human actions is a myth.
+1
On a Geological scale, humans are just overeacting about global warming. Over its 4 billion years of existance, the Earth has went through cycles of warming and cooling
