Article: Oil will run out 100 years before a replacement is found

The world will run out of oil around 100 years before replacement energy sources are available if oil use and development of new fuels continue at the current pace, a US study warns.

In the study, researchers at the University of California, Davis (UC-Davis) used the current share prices of oil companies and alternative energy companies to predict when replacement fuels will be ready to fill the gap left when oil runs dry.
 
Nah, huge money will be invested in renewable energy and prices + efficiency if those technologies will come down. The company that manages to get that right will become very very rich and powerful.

We know those companies to be currently called: Oil Companies.
 
so we can quit worrying about global warming until then? cos after that it's not really gonna be a problem anymore? :D
 
I can't believe smart people can write such stupid articles. Obviously the Oil companies like Shell are investing millions into research for alternative energy. Do you really think that big Oil companies will just decide to close doors when the oil runs out? Of course not they will have something ready by then.

Also a new alternative fuel can be invented tomorrow then the big investors will jump onto it.
 
There is huge money to be made in NOT having renewal energy. Who says it's not been invented already and just lying on a shelf already?
 
I dont think it will take that long to find a viable alternative. Virgin Atlantic have done tests with one of their Turbofans running on peanut derived biofuel and Air New Zealand did a test on one of theirs with algae derived biofuel. Both tests were succesfull. I think Algae fuel will be the winner. Does not compete with food stock and can be cultivated in grey water so fresh water is not required.

Or the big Oil companies will see any alternative fuel as a threat to their cash cow and have the inventor "disappear". (Sorry, couldn't resist):D
 
Oil companies have huge power, not just monetary , but also political. Wars have been fought for black gold. It's an insatible appetite of greed to monopolise and im pretty sure , to take over the world......

(* if that hasn't already happended*)
 
humans will wipe themselves out at this rate anyway,I don't see us getting past year 2500.
 
if the human population can go down then we can prevent global warming and probably decrease the usage of oil.

or they just buy the patentee out, then you own the technology for a rainy day.

we do indeed, but to what extent fossil fuel companies will be able to get their hands onto [and control supply of] this revenue stream is what's important.

If a company comes out with a new source of energy now it will be easily replicated given that all the oil companies have mega bucks. I reckon they waiting until the oil runs dry and just as the other oil companies won't have the cash to compete they will release it.
