And if they bomb a pump they'll take themselves out quite spectacularly. I don't mind.

In Countries where people fill their own tanks they do ring their own groceries. It is very Clever, you put in in the trolley, And the items have frids and whala the whole trolley scans itself you only pay, And if you have a card or a smart phone you do not even need a cashier!!

I shop with one of those. Walk through the store, scan the items I want, put them straight into their bags and then walk to the check-out to pay. No standing in queues, no waiting in line.

However, they do a random spot check every now and then when you pay to make sure you've scanned all your items.

Self-service is definitely faster, more efficient and a significantly better alternative to wasting your time in a queue.

Here you also fill up your own petrol tank, pump your own tyres, replace your own oil and check your own water. If you can't do that, you don't get a drivers' licence. Fairly logical, I'd say. If you can't do that much, why on earth should you be driving a car?

Granted, there's also functional (and safe) public transport for those who don't want or need a car.

The only benefit there is to having petrol attendants in South Africa is that it creates an income stream for poor folks who can't do anything else. And, honestly, I think that's a noble intention.

However, that's also why I look at unions striking and can't help but feel that they're shooting themselves in the foot.

And what did people overseas do before cards? They paid the cashier to load a certain amount to a certain pump. I don't know where you get casino-style note machines from.

I'm actually all for having a few pump attendants present, but those who want/require their service should pay a premium over those who don't. This will force people to learn. It's the same principal that banks employ - you can either use an ATM to draw cash, or pay a premium for drawing cash at a branch. But this should be a value-add, not compulsory; station owners should not be forced to employ attendants if they don't want to...

As great as all your ideas are, this is the key point. It's about job creation more than anything else.
 
Get rid of them fill up your own tank like having paid slaves to do things
Colonial thing Apartheid slavery.

Sorry if we have abolished Apartheid and the ruling party is busy tearing up or changing anything
that was of white rule. Then surely we can do away with these people and reduce the price of fuel.

How is it any different to how it currently operates? The petrol stations get issued with mini ATM like money counting machines. Some even double up as an ATM.

My boet in law owns a station and has such a machine. Bank even pays him after they closed their branch in the town and use his business as their "ATM" site.

But most people pay by card anyway.
 
Petrol Attendant Strike on Hold

A planned strike by the National Union of Metalworkers in the motor industry has been put on hold, an official said on Monday.

Numsa had not issued an official notice of strike to employers, spokesman Castro Ngobese said. When the employer bodies heard of the intention to strike, they expressed a "willingness to further negotiate".

"We will meet with the Fuel Retailers Association (FRA) and Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the workers' demands."

Ngobese indicated the union and employers had met since last week's strike announcement and those were positive.

"We are not a strike frenzy union, we support the process of constructive negotiating," Ngobese said.

If talks fell flat, 72,000 petrol attendants and motor industry employees would down tools on September 9.

Last week, Numsa said talks in July failed to resolve an impasse between Numsa and employers.

"The first phases of the wage negotiations began on the week of May 28... It was during the last phase of negotiations that a deadlock was declared by Numsa."

The union demanded a R30 per hour increase across the board on actual rates of pay in all sectors and divisions for workers earning above R6000 per month by 2016, among other things.

"Our demands should be located and understood within the context of escalating cost of living and transport, amid the triple crisis."
