More workers in the motor industry, including petrol attendants affiliated to Numsa, will down tools next week, the union announced on Tuesday.

"Seventy-two-thousand workers... [at] petrol stations, components, automotive retail, panel-beaters, car and spare parts, fitment workshops, truck body and trailer builders, and dealerships will be downing tools [on] September 2," National Union of Metalworkers of SA spokesman Castro Ngobese said in a statement.

Poor guys.
Biggest mistake ever. A lot of stations have wanted to switch to self service to cut costs.
The first time a station runs all day without hassle the petrol attendants will quickly come back to work.

I think it is law that a petroljoggie must fill your car? Not sure, could be a beer induced myth.

It is law as far as I know in this country that you can't fill your own tank.

Its a stupid law, and it needs to be done away with.

South Africa might be unique in having petrol pump attendants.

And also, imo unions get away with murder. They and their members do what they want, and employers must just pay more and more. They cost the country millions, and just get away with it.

When a new station opens up, why do they employ attendants? Are they forced to as some kind of condition? Because if there's no obligation then I would gladly open up a self-service station, might turn into a very profitable venture...
