Article: Petrol attendants to strike

When I first moved here, I got into an argument with the petrol attendant as I wanted to fill my own tank and didn't want to pay extra for the attendant to do it. It was actually quite funny :)

They earn hardly anything, they should really get more.

What has that got to do with anything?
So just because someone doesnt earn a lot, means they are entitled to earn more?

Unfortunately, their job is not skilled, they are very easily replaceable and therefore the wages will be low.

Let them strike. If the fuel retailers are clever they'll get around the limits of the law that makes it illegal for patrons to dispense their own fuel quite easily. Nothing stops a station from briefly hiring me as a casual, for R1 pay, to dispense my own petrol.

Ask the guy on the corner what would he prefer to earned: hardly anything or nothing at all. People should start to look around and be grateful for what they have!

If you are going to employ someone to do a job pay them a decent wage with minimum wage being the start. Or else don't employ them.

I don't buy the bs that they are doing anyone "a favour" by employing pump attendants.

What an ignorant thing to say. Nearly every attendant i have talked to is looking for better employment. I have even been handed a few cvs and phone numbers to help some search.

Why is it ignorant. If people really want to they can better themselves. Had the petrol attendant on the TV the other day who worked and uplift himself and is now the owner of his/her own petrol station.

When your job serves no purpose and only exists because it is mandated by government, you're going to have a bad time when making demands.

Anyone know which law that is ?

Petroleum Products Amendment Act, 2003.

Link.

With point 5 (b) being the offending part.

Actually a lot of beggars/ social grant recipients make more money than most people on minimum wage.

They are all earning at least minimum wage. Some of them much more.

Striking is a right, a right this economy is paying for. Wonder what they'll do once electric cars take over completely?

What the hell is the point of t his law? Do away with it straight away. I will pour my own god damn petrol! If need be ... I will just get a lesbian from somewhere to check my tyres and oil ... problem solved. :-)

Sheltered employment plain and simple....

I'm sure it's mainly to create jobs.

Anybody know what sort of money/profit a petrol station makes? Would be nice to put it in pespective. If they making millions, and only paying minimum wage then :wtf:
