So the poor owners won't be left pennyless and on the street because the bank reposessed their homes just because some workers are asking for a little above inflation?

Diesel prices are unregulated so you can count on the station taking a smaller margin to attract business.

I think it was meant more for safety purposes. As you would want trained people handling highly combustible products.
But I agree, the law is outdated and any safety concerns that it addresses, can probably be mitigated now

Do you have any idea what the overheads are? How much the rent is? How much they pay in electricity? Maintenance? Franchise costs? Logistics?

But this is all besides the point. Pumping juice is an unskilled job. The owner of the garage should be entitled to do as they please, they are the ones who had to provide the initial capital outlay - not the pump attendants. As it is, they're forced to employ someone to perform a task that ordinary people are capable of doing on their own.

Yes.... its very simple maths...

Normal Petrol station... assume every car has a 60l tank.. they do about 600 cars a day.. its a 24 hour garage, and every pump is pretty much always busy....

BUT, so they're making R1m a month off petrol... the rental is probably in the region of R150k per month (if not more), every attendant is probably earning R7000 per month, and there will be 15 of them so thats another R105k per month (and I'm ignoring shift allowances etc etc)

I'm not including Franchise costs, maintenance costs, advertising costs, etc etc etc...

I think this should be changed now then and also ... why dont we have prices like in the US where stations compete on price? You actually get apps that will check the different prices and tell you the stations with cheapest fuel in your area. Yes it is nice that you dont have to drive around to find the cheaper fuel ... but with our regulated price ... are we not perhaps paying more than what we might have been paying in a free market situation where the stations and brands compete?

Buy a diesel and you can experience that fun.....

Trust me, regulated prices are just much more convenient.

I'm sure we are - at some stations I pay more for diesel than petrol and others less. I wish there was an SA app for that.

With Diesel...

Most places are around R13.15 - R13.30 per litre....

The one garage near my office is R12.84....
The truck stop near my house is R12.57

so there is a LARGE difference.

And according to you, the workers should just be happy to have a job and have there pay halved for being ungrateful? Right? How dare they ask for an increase to LIVE. They are unskilled labour. So what if they make the owner a fortune (until someone can PROVE different, this is what my perception is)?

That is fine, but it doesnt make it fair. And yes life is unfair. The owners need to remember that when their businesses are burnt down by angry underpaid workers (not advocating damage to property either so the high horse can be put away LOL).

Why not just pay a decent wage if you making more than enough? Sure you wont be able to buy a Ferrari, but an S Class Merc I am sure will do fine?

What do you classify as a decent wage then. Lets start that discussion before you start going on about the owners of the petrol stations.

Absolutely no idea to be honest. Enough I suppose to pay for day to day expenses/necesities and perhaps raise a kid (even save a little at the end of the month perhaps). I am fortunate to earn a OK salary. So wont for a second say I know how much is enough for someone living on povery line.

So does anybody have FACTS on what the profit is a fairly average petrol station makes? Don't think we can get into workers pay until we know that? Or is that taboo?
