So the fact that most attendants are earning around R7k basic salary... ignoring shift allowances and tips?.. is that not enough for what is an unskilled job at the end of the day?

The profit of a petrol station is irrelevant to this discussion. What I as an investor make is not relevant to the peon on the floor... his salary is not linked to the profit of the entity in any way shape or form. You can stop with your communist tendencies.

totally agree. Law should be done away with, but it would be nice to make sure that some measures are put in place to prevent fools turning setting the place ablaze.
Also, in terms of the price of petrol, I also agree with having it deregulated, so that we have a free market system.

Really? So you wont have a problem paying R50 a litre for petrol on a trip somewhere in the middle of nowhere where there arent any other petrol stations around?

You clearly have comprehension fail.

They are paid a decent salary for what is an unskilled job. The profit margin of the station itself is irrelevant to their salary. They have taken none of the risk in starting the station, therefore they do not get to benefit from its profit margins.

They aren't making the owner a fortune. The people buying the petrol from him is. Unless you're of the view that they add some amazing value to the whole transaction of buying petrol?

And anyway, this whole setup is analogous to Pick n' Pay being forced, by law, to employ shopping attendants that push your shopping cart around for you. And consumers not being allowed to do this themselves.

You also seem to have some sort of fail.

Just because they are unskilled labourers does not mitigate the fact that they play a role in the money (low or high) that the station makes. Why not be fair and just pay a decent wage that keeps up with inflation? Not saying they should earn the same as the owner. Just something fair. if they are asking for a 60% or 100% increase in wages, then i agree, that is silly. But a couple percent above inflation will not impoverish station owners?

They add zero value. None at all. Petrol stations the world over function perfectly well without them.

They are paid a decent wage ffs.. they're paid WAY above minimum wage + shift allowances, and they get tipped as well. I would assume most petrol attendants are getting paid R10k with all the little benefits they get.

You were the one who brought profit into the equation, when it is totally irrelevant... the profit a company makes does not dictate its salaries to normal unskilled employees. They play a role in making the money purely because it is legislated that they have to be there to do a job we can all do ourselves, but the do not determine how that money is made or how many people consume the product the company sells.

R10k. Care to prove that? Or even the R7k story? If it is true, then I will concede. That is pretty good money and I can honestly not see someone struggling to live on that. But with that salary, MUST come an increase which is at the VERY least on par with inflation. Anything less is an insult as it basically says, my salary last year should at least by me the same things this year that it did last year.
