Article: Pistorius gets bail

Now hopefully we'll get undeniable forensic evidence, if that exists in South Africa...
Wasn't there a story about the forensics in South Africa being in a very troubled state?

I just wish bail was denied so that there would've been an urgent appeal to the High Court. This would've kept SA and our justice system on the world spot-light. Now come Monday it will be the usual boring stuff: Ramphele, Zuma, corruption and so on and so forth and stuff like that.

if there's any forensic labs that's still operating as i kno of more than one thats closed. like one of the dna labs. the money would rather be spend on ikantla and ministerial home upgrades than fighting crime.

Absolutely disgusted at out legal system (not to say that the same thing hasn't happened in other countries). Granting bail for cold blooded murder, is directly attributing monetary value to the value of a persons life. How is that morally acceptable?

What? Killers in this country usually get away with paying much less for bail.

I understand this, but this case has just publicly emphasized the disgrace we call a legal system. And to be frank, I don't see how the amount has anything to do with it. Paying money, R50 000 or R1 000 000, to get away with murder is just plain wrong.

He's not getting away with murder. This is bail. The trial is yet to come...

He was always gonna get bail, now government will be a R1m richer.

Oh really you can't be serious now?

Bail is reimbursed. It does not go to government unless you don't show up for court...

Wow. The complete ignorance around the legal system boggles the mind.

People really think this means he got away with it?

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to chirp up and remove all doubt, perhaps?

In my eyes, the SA Law is lousy. When you get bail for murder like this. I can almost bet, this will now drag for years and eventually he will be freed. Lack of evidence. So iam not sure why I'm not doing this too

There is so much fail on this thread.

First its bail! He gets the money back when he reappears in court. That's why its called bail.

Second - how can he get away with murder. This was only the bail hearing - the court case will take many moons to come to a conclusion.

Seriously, how can so many people be so clueless about what bail is?

Absolutely shocked and disgusted that he has been given bail! A schedule 6 offence, no exceptional circumstances why Pistorius should be released and he is given bail. WTF! Nair is not fit to be a judge!
The only criteria that should come into consideration are whether the person is a flight risk that no amount of bail would deter and whether they pose an immediate danger to others.

The only fairly trustworthy forensic evidence that exists on the planet is DNA. That at least we know it's error rate, even if the courts are typically ignorant of the facts in this regard. The rest is of totally unknown reliability.

And a danger to witnesses...

I'm not sure his neighbours ought to feel too safe going to the toilet for the next year or so...

I find it a little ironic that the magistrate, while giving his ruling, would briefly run through a list of Oscar's assets. If he wasn't a target for a burglary in the past, he might be now.
