Article: Private schools grow in SA

Private school attendance rose by 87 percent between 2000 and 2011, according to a report on Thursday.

Parents were losing faith in public schools, where enrolment only grew by 13 percent in the same period, reported Business Day, quoting from the SA Institute of Race Relations' latest survey.

with 50+ students in a class in public schools ... any parent that can afford to ... will definitely not be sending their kids to public schools
although ... it would be nice if I can get some of that tax money back ... seeing as the gov is not providing schooling for my kids

Some government schools in the Rondebosh area of CT are very nice, thank you.

Saw a school in the EC on news yesterday. 70 kids per class.

That's not education, that's crowd control.

Erm, to be honest what part of your tax money is used on you thease days.

Security - you have to provide your own as SAPS suck at it
Roads - Pay tolls for proper roads and if its not a toll road its falling apart with potholes everywhere.
Health - Erm when last did you go to a state hospital
School - Send your kids to a private school

precisely why I want some if not all my tax money back .... can't think of anything that the gov provides via the taxes .. other than maybe roads and for that I work 3 to 4 months a year for the gov .... does not compute!!

The ex model C schools are semi private in that they can raise their own fund and hire additional teachers lowering the number of kids per class. So for instance in an ex model C school as I understand it some of the teachers will be paid directly by the dep of education while others will be paid for privately by the school.

Spent an hour this morning researching primary schools in the Randburg area and its scary. Getting into Randpark Primary is tough due to high demand. Fortunately we are in the zoning but it still sounds like we may get unlucky. The private schools though cost the earth. Curro Aurora costs R55K per annum for Grade 1 currently and that is a cheapish private school as I understand it. No ways I can afford that for both my kids. Right now the short list consists of Randpark Primary or Laerskool Fontainbleau. The Afrikaans schools sound like they are more disciplined but I don't know. Anyone else with kids in the Randburg area that can offer some advice?

There are other "traditionally" government services that we use private alternatives to because of theft, unreliability, slowness etc:

Postal services (postnet and the plethora of door to door couriers... in the UK, most of my online purchases were sent by Royal Mail)
Transport etc

How soon will it be before we get private fire stations popping up? Private militias? Private town planning (we're probably there already with the likes of Dainfern, kyalami estate etc)...

Private electricity providers... (Hi Arthur)

The list goes on. I HATE paying my tax.

My school is an ex-model C school and our fees are just under R5000 a year. And we have a just over 1000 kids ...

Basically a third of our staff are paid by the Governing Body including me. Our grade 1-3 classes have about 25-30 learners and our grade 4-7 classes have about +- 35 kids. The English class are in the low 40s because there's only 1 English class per grade compared to 3/4 Afrikaans classes.

R5000 is still pretty good. The better former model C schools around here (Alberton) are R1500/pm - R2000/pm.

Wait till you have a fire and you get a bill for services rendered, which now happens a lot.

True but those schools, along with most of the other good government schools are now basically semi private.

Exactly. Examples being Rondebosch Prep and High Schools which are both largely driven by the old boys unions and an involved parent body. Couple that with great teachers, a focus on discipline and a mentality best illustrated by the very first line of the school song ("Pride of our school in every heart"), it's ticking all the boxes for successful schools.

These schools are good in spite of government (and due to their ability to largely ignore a lot of what government says), not because of it.

LOL :D

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think the main reason why enrolment in private schools is rocketing up so fast is because of the many cheapish private schools popping up all over the place, some are even cheaper than Model C public schools.

I haven't noticed any particular increase in the number of traditional Catholic/Anglican private schools. The school I went to for instance is still pretty much the same size in terms of enrolment, around 30 kids in a class and only around 1000 kids from pre-school to matric, despite a hell of a long waiting list.

That is very very low for a former model c school.
Heck even 10 years ago I paid more than that at primary school - no wonder though you complain about your salary.
At the school where my daughter teaches fees are around R1500 a month but the teachers are paid ok-ish

I was in the first Curro. I should be getting shares. :p

The Director/Chairman of the board is an absolutely shocking **** of a man.

Bugger, I thought Curro Holdings would be a crap share to buy, but looks more and more like a good share these days.
It's still a crap share. Heavily overpriced. There's a lot of growth available, but not enough to generate anything close to a good P/E ratio.

But our demographics have changed a lot since those days.

Wow that's not bad.
