Article: Private schools grow in SA

What bothers me is the promise made by the education minister to change the law so that she, not a school governing body, can dictate class sizes.

Currently parents pay a ton extra for a decent ex model C school. That school hires extra teachers and build more rooms. Total class size goes down, quality of education goes up.

After angie gets her way tons of non-paying parents force their kids into a good school, paying parents remove their kids, the school collapses.

Both the minister and the SGB's are wrong in this case. The SGB's can use the money to make their schools exclusive and yes if the minister forces her way the parents will pull out. What should happen is that in the interest of equality the minister and the schools must agree on a number that satisfies both without the minister bullying them and destroying a good thing or the SGB's using their money to exclude lesser fortunate kids for nefarious reasons.
 
Apartheid is to blame for all this. when we grew up we used to be 60 or 70 in a class. It was hidden back then. Its not really a surprise to most black cats out here who've been in the same situation

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think the main reason why enrolment in private schools is rocketing up so fast is because of the many cheapish private schools popping up all over the place, some are even cheaper than Model C public schools.

I haven't noticed any particular increase in the number of traditional Catholic/Anglican private schools. The school I went to for instance is still pretty much the same size in terms of enrolment, around 30 kids in a class and only around 1000 kids from pre-school to matric, despite a hell of a long waiting list.

Well did you ever hear about a township private school ?

One of the ladies at our work lives in Thembisa and sends her kids to a private school there. Its a smallish school but looks like her kids are getting a much better education. My mother is in education and a lot of her business is selling material to these little private schools... most of them religious and little more than a large home school.
