A completely meaningless statement. Those smoking 10 cigarettes a day doubled their risk factor and those puffing more than 25 a day quadrupled it.
A completely meaningless statement.
Anyway I wouldn't worry about it, if you enjoy smoking you should just keep on doing it, and the cigarette manufacturers are investing in R&D to come up with alternative ways to deliver nicotine. It is going to be interesting to see which nicotine delivery technology wins.
Why is it a meaningless statement?
And why would you identify the smoker's pleasure as the criterion for whether or not to keep on smoking?
Its meaningless, because its just a number. there is no baseline... if 1 out of 1000000000000 people die of x type of cancer, and by smoking I double my risk, i still have very good odds of not getting that type of cancer.
Now, we're finding two-thirds of deaths in current smokers are attributable to smoking."

Ahhhhh. The typical, ignorant smoker, ladies and gentlemen. :erm:

Sure, but the article also says
Is his smoking, gambling and drinking harming anybody else?
Oi! I don't gamble.. thats for idjits![]()
Problem with that is what exactly do they mean?... I can attribute someones death to smoking if the guy who drove into him at 100km/h was distracted whilst trying to light a cigarette.
They're just statements that have no meaning because they have no context.
We both know that this is not what the researcher have in mind. I do agree with you that he could have better communicated his results. The point however stands: according to his research, smoking kills more people than thought before. If you would like to have the actual numbers, I guess it might be worth to get your hands on his scientific article.
my father died at the age of 59 after 50 years of smoking. he smoke about 20s a day sometimes when i was still small i have to buy 2 packetts a day. he died because his lungs couldn`t get oxygen to first his brain and then his heart. The health risks of smoking are worse than we thought, an Australian researcher said Friday.
But the good news is that those who quit in their 20s or 30s avoid about 90 per cent of the excess risk compared with those who never smoked.
