Article: Smoking is bad - really bad

Why would I pay a company to sell me a product that harms my body and gain nothing positive in return?

I guess looking cool is more important than staying healthy.

Logic....

Define "nothing positive"

Now, we're finding two-thirds of deaths in current smokers are attributable to smoking."

Considering that 100% of deaths are contributable to living, you are guaranteed to die of something.

The health risks of smoking are worse than we thought, an Australian researcher said Friday.

But the good news is that those who quit in their 20s or 30s avoid about 90 per cent of the excess risk compared with those who never smoked.

Yes, yes, everything is bad. Air is bad, food is bad, electricity is bad, people are bad I hear this all the time bad, bad, bad. Thanks for holding my hand Dorothy but Kansas isn't for me, I'll make my own way and my own decisions.

Name one thing you benefit from smoking, and don't tell me that it relieves stress thats a load of bull, its mind over matter.

You don't need to drink Coke either, just drink water with sugar in it if you're looking for results

my father died at the age of 59 after 50 years of smoking. he smoke about 20s a day sometimes when i was still small i have to buy 2 packetts a day. he died because his lungs couldn`t get oxygen to first his brain and then his heart.
that is why i hate smoking, when i walk to work in the morning almost everyone in front of me is smoking. nothing i can do because it is outside. still no fresh air for me! i can expect lung cancer in the near future because of you guys that are unwilling to stop this bad habit

You are trolling, right?

Fear mongering hogwash seems to have gotten the better of homeboy. :)

Yeah never mind all the factories and cars pumping out huge volumes of fumes into the atmosphere, homeboy is worried about a little secondhand smoke from a cigarette. Im not a smoker but this whole idea that people shouldn't smoke because they gain zero benefits from it is also rubbish, they enjoy it and thats a benefit. Sure its bad for your health but us humans perform all sorts of activities thats detrimental to our health, many we probably aren't even aware of.

it's not about looking cool, it's an addiction, like ice cream

To some people it is I know two people that got better self confidence and are more "cool" since they started smoking.

I quit around five years ago and my reasons for starting were believe it or not boredom lol,I guess I have too many things to fill my life with now.

My point is some people do it out of boredom, others to "relieve stress",some because its the norm in their family and some to be cool. You cant generalize and say everybody smokes for only one reason.

Smokers usually say things like: "I smoke because I enjoy it."
My reply is usually something like: "I enjoy jumping off bridges... problem is I won't be able to enjoy it repeatedly, so I look at alternatives"

Why cant you base jump/bungee jump repeatedly?

Sure... but it becomes prohibitively expensive very quickly as I would want to do it multiple times a day much like smoking. I can afford to jump off bridges without bungee cords but that's not very good for my health :p

Also jumping off a bridge with bungee cords etc is like sex with a condom or an e-cigarette... it's a safer alternative but not quite like the real thing.

Right so its a financial thing, smoke as much as they can afford is what you're now trying to say?

Why would you try to make this comparison, does smoking carry a 100% chance of death after one puff? Everything you do carries a risk, logical people ;) , will weigh up the probability of this risk and how much enjoyment they get from said activity and go from there.

Not a financial thing as I said I prefer the cheaper alternative.
And on your second point that's exactly my point people need to weigh up the risk sure some people would still jump off a bridge others would still smoke after weighing up the risks but don't complain when you die or get cancer. And that's everyone's right to decide to do it anyways. What I don't like is when smokers are on their death bed and their family is all torn up, been there done that almost wanted to tell everyone not to be sad as this cancer was something he didn't mind getting it was his choice after all.
At least jumping off a bridge is quick.

Im certain smokers are aware of the potential risks and yes cancer is a horrible death, i dont think its any different to the overweight person eating poorly and doing little to no exercise as an example though. Will you tell everyone not to be sad as this heart attack was something he didnt mind getting? There is certainly a stigma surrounding smokers more so than others who perform activities with similar health risks.
