Article: Smoking is bad - really bad

i dont think its any different to the overweight person eating poorly and doing little to no exercise as an example though. Will you tell everyone not to be sad as this heart attack was something he didnt mind getting?
You don't even realize how many times i've wanted to tell people that!!!!

Stressing out about second hand smoke. Stress is a killer, causes heart attacks and strokes.

Face it OP, you're basically farked

The other day someone in the cardiac unit admitted that 80% of their patients are smokers and that without them they would have to shut down the unit. Keep it up. Its good for business.

Just because 80% of their patients are smokers does not mean 80% of them are there because of smoking.

I have nothing against smokers or smoking. I do however have a problem with people who like to tell others how to live their lives.

so smokers make up 80% of the unit, but only 2% of the smoker population is admitted to it yearly? :p

Actually they there from smoking related issues (according to them). Just saying.

I have no issues with how you choose to kill yourself.

Just, don't force me to breath in your pollution :p

My wife is working directly with a cardiologist and fat people by far make up the majority of their patients. Heart disease is the #1 killer.

I have no issue with smoking as long as I don't have to smell it or inhale the second hand smoke.

The issue in my experience is that smokers tend to gather near entrances of buildings as smoking inside is prohibited. This forces all people to pass through clouds of smoke on their way into the building. Quite inconsiderate in my opinion.

There are laws in place to distance the smokers from the buildings doors.

I hate it when you walk past a car and you get those exhaust fume smells up your nose, i have no problem with cars otherwise :p

Cars have more of a practical purpose than smoking.

doesn't stop them from inconveniencing me, people can make excuses for cars but not for 2 smokers in the day :p

I tried driving a smoker to work once, he only got a couple of meters before he was huffing and weezing. I blame the smoking for his poor performance.

i once told a car he could smoke inside my house, i almost died :p :D

Those who fall into the obese category perhaps. We now know that the overweight range is not unhealthy in that respect.

Totally irrelevant. People who complain that cigarette smoke causes them to nearly die if someone lights up anywhere in their vicinity should be making the same complaint about cars.

Sure, but the article also says
So what? Risk statements as given in the article are still completely worthless.

Ahhhhh. The typical, ignorant smoker, ladies and gentlemen. :erm:
They're not the one who doesn't understand that the numbers typically given in news reports are useless.

And why would you identify the smoker's pleasure as the criterion for whether or not to keep on smoking?
It's no business of mine if people choose to smoke, rock climb, cycle, bungie jump, play sport or any number of other things that can get a person maimed or killed. Are you one of those busybody types that likes to micromanage other people's lives?

Looks like you are completely ignoring the gist of the article and other such reports.

Well, you're the one who made it your business by encouraging others to keep on smoking in the first place. Let me refresh your memory

if you enjoy smoking you should just keep on doing it

Why would you suggest I am micromanaging anyone's lives? I only suggested that, in the light of years of scientific research on the health risks of smoking, it seems downright irresponsible and stupid to make the pleasure of smoking the only criterion for continued smoking. I criticized your suggestion, not your smoking (or anybody else's).
