Article: Spur 200g ribs fight

Let me just jump in here :) My little nephew used to work at the spur during his holidays, and I know for a FACT, that those portions are not rationed, or pre-packed or pre-weighed. They pre-cook the ribs, and then its a whole bunch of this pre-ccoked ribs they throw in these big white plastic buckets, and then as the order comes in they just take from there and put on the grill with basting. They sometimes take a larger piece and a smaller one to make up say 500g or what ever. So don't be fooled and think its 200g... they themselves have no idea how much those things weigh and just guess. Some patrons might end up with bigger portions that has been advertised and some less. Guess its all in the luck.

Aha! This must be the "checks and balances" Spur were referring to...

It seems the special has been removed from their website...

The special was from a while ago since the case to took some time to develop, but interestingly you can still go to their specials where nothing is mentioned about pre-cooked weight. There's a disclaimer on the 'main menu' part of the site but not on the specials page or any of the individual special offers.

Pre-cooked weight is the (widely acknowledged) industry standard because it's the only way it can be done. Would you be happier if bits of your steak were removed prior to serving if it was overweight and those removed pieces were added to underweight steaks to make up the difference?

+1

Is it on the specials card in the restaurant, or the physical menu?

Really ?

Supposedly mature people posting from mobile devices and not bothering to read in ?

Do not complain about your fate.

This thread cannot compare to the comments on News24:

The NRCS is correct on their submitted opinion that a portion is weigh as raw mass. Suggesting to receive the ordered mass as per cooked product is absurd and practically idiotic. The suggestion people are making that they should cook larger portions to the ordered mass is... well, don't come eat at my house. They want to pay more (raw portion), the more the meat portion is cooked, really???

Next time these people go to the butcher, complain and biatch, expect a clever in the back...

Van Wyk lodged a complaint with ASA over Spur's menu board that promoted a "Tuesday's 200g ribs & four buffalo wings" deal for R49.95.
Waiting for round two when Van Wyk complains that the wings were from chickens and not buffalo as advertised…

Not been to a spur in 29 years, will not go. Food is disgusting. van Wyk try this.

You realise chips are literally cheap as chips, right?
No, it's not. The person ordering the well done steak is getting more meat just because he wants the life (water) cooked out of it. Simple and fairer all around is weighing the meat before it's cooked and…

No chips in not that cheap in fact, frozen chips works out considerably more per kilo, as it's chemically treated to avoid it going black flash frozen and bagged, it's cooked in cooking oil which isn't cheap, when it's very busy they use the side where chips is normally made to cook other foods which in a busy evening that oil will need to be replaced the next day.

Oil in a big restaurant doesn't last long needs to be replaced regularly that considerably reduces profits on chips, also prices of potato's fluctuate a lot. I run a small take away last week I paid R45.00 per 10kgs this week I paid R55.00 a bag best part exactly from the same farm.Next week I will pay R50.00 a bag, over December paid as much as R67.00 that seriously cuts into profits.Prices however remain the same it doesn't go up or down relating to prices paid for the raw product.

I only put prices up inline with increases to electricity considering on a busy day I use as much as 50 units 3500watts per chipper I have makes a serious dent in profits.I have found the more chips you sell the more the over all profit, considering that you first need to cover oil expenses and electricity then the paper bag it's served in and then the plastic bag it's placed in the salt and vinegar.

For example on a pension day here I need to sell 4 bags of chips to cover oil and electricity before I actually start turning a profit on it, yesterday was pension it was extremely hot so demand was down did manage to sell 4 bags.Didn't turn a profit but managed to cover costs. :(

I'm taking my wife to court. Bought 700grams of smoked ribs and this is what she served me.

Unacceptable ;)
