Article: Spur 200g ribs fight

Bio I still can't do any chain restaurants. Dross is crap. Wimpy is crap. Spur is crap. Same plates same ****zy service same crappy food same food presentation same droopy waiter/waitress. Baaaaaabaaaa. No just no innovation.

So where do you go to eat?

Small little owner run places where the chef spends time. with you and has a hissy fit if anyone dares order a well done steak.
These little places are everywhere. I suppose it's much the same as does one support the huge chain stores or does one pay a little more for a personal service.

1 kg of Woolies ribs on the braai. Will I be able to finish it?

If he can't burn a steak the way I want it I'll send my missus to the kitchen and let her show him how it's done.

"It argued that its quality management system ensured that the correct products and weights were served to customers."

If any of you have ever been involved in quality managment systems (e.g. ISO 9001, 17025) you will know this is a lie.

Let me just jump in here :) My little nephew used to work at the spur during his holidays, and I know for a FACT, that those portions are not rationed, or pre-packed or pre-weighed. They pre-cook the ribs, and then its a whole bunch of this pre-ccoked ribs they throw in these big white plastic buckets, and then as the order comes in they just take from there and put on the grill with basting. They sometimes take a larger piece and a smaller one to make up say 500g or what ever. So don't be fooled and think its 200g... they themselves have no idea how much those things weigh and just guess. Some patrons might end up with bigger portions that has been advertised and some less. Guess its all in the luck.

This is true. I worked for Black Steer and they also pre-cooked their ribs and kept them in plastic buckets in the fridge. To me it looked like they were pre-boiled. Wasn't uncommon to see two separate pieces on a plate to meet the advertised weight either.

Generally eating anything medium to rare at spur is like fondling a rattle snake...

The spur in pietersburg is also extremely bad, we waited 90 mins for our food. I can't imagine how it is at a city where the restaurant is actually full... The hello peter complaints are also telling, some downright scary.:wtf:

I heard a Spur radio advert yesterday. 100g sirloin & 100g rump together for R69 (IIHC). No mention of pre-cooked weight/industry standards etc. I'm thinking of testing their claims, but the last steak I had at Spur was also a special offer & truly terrible in every way.

Anybody given the current offer a try yet? Anybody else gonna take a scale along, or do Spur pat you down now before they let you enter?

I see there's a 200g version for R99 & apparently the offers have been on since April 1st (to the 30th).

We all know that these are the pre-cooked weight of the meat. Unless you want to tell them to weigh them BEFORE preparing the food? Oh goodness, what will you do if your 100g sirloin is actually 122g?

Some people have got time to bring scales to restaurants while we bring stomachs....

I'd be too embarrassed to take my scale (R19.99 from Clicks) outside the house and suspect that its accuracy varies by about 25% either way.

Besides, the chicken suppliers have long ago admitted that they inflate the weight of their products by injecting brine so why not the rest of the mob?

I actually thought about a fair way of doing things. The restaurant industry needs to agree to sell/advertise things like steak, calamari, prawns, chops etc. on a ZAR/100g basis. So you see the advert: 'Sirloin steak at R35.95/100g with chips/rice & onions', you go in, choose your pre-cooked steak, they weigh it & tell you how much your dish will cost. You can accept, or choose another cut. Simpler & fairer, neh?

I see now that the 2Kg 'frozen chicken braai packs' clearly state '30% brine' in BIG letters on the front. I assume this is as a result of earlier complaints.
