Article: The real matric pass rate: DA

The DA announced on Tuesday that its leader, Helen Zille, would be writing to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga requesting an independent audit of the 2013 National Senior Certificate results.

While the celebratory mood continues due to the 78.24% national pass rate, we need to take a hard look at how this high percentage was achieved, and if it is a credible yardstick that can be used to rate the health of our education system.
 
More stupid lazy people passing due to lower passing requirements and lower standards... What else is there to say?

Pathetic that a pass means you only have to know 1/3 of the syllabus, let alone whether the syllabus is a quality one or not.
 
I dont understand the the fuss abou the pass rate...

I scraped through on my arse many moons ago and today I drive a 160GSI Monza. CotY 91 FFS.

None of your degrees can afford that...

Not everybody will be as lucky as you. Some will have to settle for '73 VW Beetles :(
 
I am sure if the 30% pass standard was removed, and it was minimum of 50% to pass, the matric pass rate would be devastating.

It really makes me wonder, how is it possible for someone not to make the 30%...I can sort of understand if they in the Transkei (no teachers, non-poor infrastructure, etc) but in town and around....:(

It would have been prior to '94 as well. When I matriculated in '95 I'm pretty sure the pass marks were 33% for SG and 40% for higher grade.

Yep my one teacher used to give me 33 1/3 % religiously and when a substitute teacher replaced her for a semester I sudently got in the 70's and had to adjust accordingly. :)
 
Something tells me if the WC was still the top performing province like in the recent past, no investigation would have been called for. In fact, has the DA ever questioned the results to this extent in the past when they held the top performing province?

As much as I agree with the DA, I do agree with you as well. But here is a slight difference: the WC or Gauteng being top isnt a surprise given historical records. The North West and Free State being top 2 is suspicious...

The WC is top in an arguably more important metric - the drop out rate. Yet they still question the results...

If the people who were passed despite getting 30 for 2 subjects were failed, there would have been 179 fewer matriculants. Not many people pass that way.
 
The big jump is suspect to say the least - election ploy??

More depressing is pupils with 7 A's unable to get into UCT because of skin colour and admission policies. Cannot believe they full of pupils with lower marks.

Where is this country heading?

Maybe your regular teacher was smokin' hot and wearing short skirts and buttoned down shirts, causing you to get lower marks?
 
They need to show how dumb the system is. Check when the 1st records are retrievable then recalculate the 'pass' % with the simple minimum requirements to 'pass' change. If the % is huge and similar to present then it's obvious what's happen ;)
