Article: Zimbabwe crayfish problem

Scientists in Zimbabwe say a fresh-water crayfish brought from Australia is breeding out of control in the northern Lake Kariba, devouring the food sources of other fish and putting the nation's entire aquatic ecosystem at risk.

Wait, Zim has scientists?? Who know about crayfish behaviour?

Damned whitey country ruining it for everyone again!

Well at least they can feast on crayfish.

All crayfish are actually fresh water species. We just call our sea cockroaches crays for a reason I cannot remember.

So there's regular food shortages but they are overflowing with crayfish ??

I think Zimbabwe has bigger problems than an invasive crayfish species.

Off the top of my head ... I can think of the biggest one and he happens to be the president of the country.

Isn't this solving 2 problems at once?

Gross unemployment, lots of hungry tummies. Just let them catch the crayfish. I give the problem 2 weeks to sort itself out.

Also Australians and New Zealanders. And Ozzies call the freshwater species yabby's - remember catching them in the Murray River as child by the dozens.

I smell a business opportunity.

Exactly, I mean as the poster below pointed out, unemployment / hunger tick tick!
Even export and make more moola unless this particular species is not good for eating for some reason but I doubt that. If the Zimbo's don't wont to scoff it, someone else will for sure. I'll take a bucket :D

Just did a google search on 'Red Claw fresh water crayfish recipes', plenty!!!!

I actualy know a guys that breeds and sells the australian blue crayfish here is s.a , it amazing how popular they are with collectors and its illegal to keep them exactly for the reason that they would destroy our eco system should they get out into the wild, there are no natural predators for them so they immediately jump straight to the top of the food chain.
