Article: Zuma asked for extra public holiday

President Jacob Zuma has been asked to grant working South Africans an extra public holiday next year because Christmas falls on a Sunday.

"It came to our attention that during 2011, working South Africans will only enjoy 11 out of the 12 paid public holidays," said Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) general secretary Dennis George on Monday.

What took them so long to figure this out? Anyway, it happens, move on.

Doesn't phase me, we're closed during that period anyway. They should be thankful that Xmas is a public holiday in the first place - people of other religions don't get one.

So xmas is very productive at your company? I just sit around and listen to how the phones don't ring.
Erm. They want to delete one productive working day from the calendar because of a holiday falling on a weekend.

they didnt know that in terms of the public holiday act that any public holiday that falls on a sunday is automatically carried over to that Monday.....stupids ****s

Yep, but Family Day (also a public holiday) then falls on a Monday, meaning that Tuesday is a normal working day.

Did you read the article? They did know this, but as the monday is already a public holiday, it doesn't carry over to the tuesday.

Actually they want a 2-for-1, seeing as boxing day (26th) falls on the Monday. So now the poor sods feel cheated out of an extra day.

At our work they do. They even get of to go to church.

uuum, I was told to take forced leave over the period, and I would not mind saving a days leave (that I was not going to take in the first place)... so if it works out, all the better, but I have my doubts..

Sure, but that's not really the same thing as a public holiday, which is applicable to everyone regardless of company policy.

When I came to this country (from Zim) I was seriously amazed at how many holidays you have.

Also I am very impressed with Fedusa and Mr George, for realising that the holiday will not happen, a mere month in advance. I take it they did not look at their calendars all year?
