Article: Zuma asked for extra public holiday

When I came to this country (from Zim) I was seriously amazed at how many holidays you have.

Also I am very impressed with Fedusa and Mr George, for realising that the holiday will not happen, a mere month in advance. I take it they did not look at their calendars all year?
Do you normaly look at your calender 6 - 12 months in advance? I know I don't. :erm: I also didn't know this until I had to submit my December leave only then I realised that Xmas was not a deductable holiday this year.

uuum, I was told to take forced leave over the period, and I would not mind saving a days leave (that I was not going to take in the first place)... so if it works out, all the better, but I have my doubts..

This.

Yes I do, plan my holidays way in advance and apply for the way in advance then people can't take my prefered maximised holiday over April.

Well in all honesty, it won't really make us less productive because the amount of days off would be the same as it was last year.

It's still one fewer productive day than we would have had.

Very suprised they never asked for two days as next year has 366 days?

Erm. They want to delete one productive working day from the calendar because of a holiday falling on a weekend.

Wow. /facepalm

Well tat logic should be followed through, 2013 should have one less public holiday

I do :o. I want to put in my leave before the other people. I already know the holidays for next year. I will need to take more days to have a long holiday over Easter than I did this year. Christmas will also be better next year. Less days leave to have 10 days leave. :o

If we do not book early our holiday does not get approved.

I don't think a president/government should have any say on such matters.

well that explains that. The boss came through about a week ago and told us that nobody that was part of the national barganing counsel will be working on the 27th.

We're in shutdown at the time so all it really does is save us a extra days leave if true.

"It came to our attention that during 2011, working South Africans will only enjoy 11 out of the 12 paid public holidays," said Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) general secretary Dennis George on Monday.
It is a Christian holiday which Mr George is talking about and the Bible says 'Six days shalt thou labour and do all that thou hast to do. On the seventh day, the Sabbath thou shalt rest and prepare for the week ahead.'. As a joke Zuma should say OK it came to my attention that bible says 6 day work week so we are moving to that. Let Mr George eat his hat.

Well there's f%^&ol to do at work round about now as all the clients enforce a strict change freeze period during the festive holidays. We are normally forced to take leave. I joined this company in November, 3 years ago and was told that from the 15th December I should take leave until the new year. But I barely had 3 days available so I had to carry a negative balance going into the new year.

Doesn't phase me, we're closed during that period anyway. They should be thankful that Xmas is a public holiday in the first place - people of other religions don't get one.

Wtf, other religions get christian holidays (which are all public holidays) plus their own!

I hate it when companies do that. I cannot believe it is even legal. I think it is something that should be addressed. I can understand that they force you to take leave when you have 40 plus days and have not been on holiday fir two years but forcing people to take leave over a time that does not work for them is not on. I do not go on leave this time of year. I do not have to.( no kids) I take it when the beaches are empty.

If they do it over this time of year not much is lost. The courts close, Builders, engineers are off for 6 weeks. The only people that are busy is in retail. and even if we get a month extra holiday they will still be working.

Exaclty this. Every year I start with negative leave. Then I'm forced to take almost all the leave I accumulate during the year over Xmas -- this year, it's literally all the leave I've accumulated. Next year I'll start in the red again. If I need to take a day off during the year, it has to be unpaid.
