ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said that if the word "heaven" was inappropriate in a figurative sense, expressions such as 'marriage made in heaven', 'heavenly voices' and 'sweets from heaven' would not exist

"South Africans, both black and white, fully understand the use of figurative expressions and the context is which our president used 'heaven or hell' in figuratively expressing himself over the weekend," he said in denying that Zuma's comments were blasphemous.

"We are also of the view that those who are 'alarmed' by his expression are probably driven by jealousy for not having thought of the expression."

I am an atheist and I am insulted by the speech. It seems to me that the speech was written for the ears of idiots...Is that what the ANC thinks of their followers?

I initially didn't like Zuma, I guess due to all the negative propoganda by the media etc. Then he became president and I slowly warmed to him. After listening to his speeches and interviews over time I started respecting the man.

BUT this one speech has destroyed ALL the respect I had for him...it has been a sad week.

You are late man! Many people took away the benefit of the doubt when it emerged he'd fathered another child out of wedlock & when he suggested there was nothing wrong with S'bu accepting the 'benz from those emerging contractors. And then the whole fiasco with him suggesting there's nothing wrong with this family using his to benefit from juicy government tenders.

The list is long... and sadly this particular one is really a storm in a tea cup. It's ironic how people who suggested ANC sheep won't understand the metaphorical meaning of 'kill the boer' fail to see Zuma could only have speaking figuratively. If Zuma offended God, let God be the judge. Hypocrites!

You could say he did, doesn't Islam have its version of Heaven or Hell? The comment wasn't specifically aimed at christians, just that you would be voting for "hell" if you voted opposition.

If he used Muslim descriptions for these he would have been in more shyte than he is now.

But it is true. He probably hinting towards Zionists.

These Democratic Alliance (DA) pussies really need to pull themselves towards themselves. The outcry over Jacob Zuma's witty and trenchant comparison between the African National Congress (ANC) and Christianity is just further proof that, whereas JZ is indeed a man of the people, the DA is the party of poopers.

What is the DA complaining about? That Jacob Zuma's rhetoric is spot on for his supporters? Or can it really be that the party of the intellectual approach is complaining because its unlettered antagonist is comparing one societal construct with another? Or, heaven forbid (ha), is Helen Zille's mob actually complaining because it believes there's a difference between JC's snowjob and JZ's con job?

Give me a break -- President Zuma is absolutely accurate in his metaphor. The ANC appears to operate exactly the way organised Christianity does. As with Christianity, it's who you know that advances you in the political arena. If you haven't personally welcomed Jesus into your life, or JZ into your business, you have no chance of getting to heaven, or that Great Tender in the Sky as it's known locally.

As with Catholicism, which I believe is still a version of Christianity, the ANC has a holy old fossil it drags out every now and then when it needs to score points with an unruly congregation complaining about how long paradise, or low-cost housing in our case, is taking to arrive

The reality is that if most of the ANC voters were believers this would have offended them as well and it alone would have shaken up our politics and would have shifted the balance towards the middle.

But it does not. It says a lot about the ANC and it’s supporters.

to be fair church going people in the normal course of their daily lives do things which run foul of religious doctrine. so it would be no more hypocritical than on any other day

I would like to confess that I have decided that I will stop going to church. I mean, who needs to go to church in order to go to heaven when all you have to do is produce an ANC membership?

I would like to say sorry to my dear pastors at God First Church, but it appears there is an easier way to go through the Pearly Gates. It involves no tithes, no offerings and most importantly, it means I no longer have to drag myself out of bed every morning after a night out partying on a Saturday. Praise the ANC!

One of the benefits of joining the broad church (as it is often called, a broad church, not a narrow one) of the African National Congress is that it pays to be a card-carrying member. Who knows what tenders could be coming your way? Just look at how many well-off ANC members are out there. Oh, hang on. A vast majority of them also aren’t. This debunks my theory.

As some of you may or may not know, there has been a great deal of controversy after the president of the ANC and the country, Jacob Zuma, said to supporters in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape: "When you vote for the ANC, you are also choosing to go to heaven. When you don't vote for the ANC you should know that you are choosing that man who carries a fork...who cooks people...

"When you are carrying an ANC membership card, you are blessed. When you get up there, there are different cards used but when you have an ANC card, you will be let through to go to heaven."
