So I installed 9.04 on my Aspire One and wow!!!!!!! Using the EXT4 file system and it flies on the SSD. My wifi and sound works out of the box, no configuration required. Bootup is in sub 15 seconds without any tweaks.

Really happy as I can use my Netbook again after 8.10 started to make it unbearably slow.

:D Ubuntu 9.04 is a first class distro now (I cannot compare others as I've never really tried non-Debian distros)
 
What's the difference between the netbook version and the standard one?
 
Netbook Remix is special setup for Atom netbooks - custom kernal, drivers and all. Also comes with the Netbook remix desktop (tried but don't like). Has some apps not found in the standard distro CD (but you can apt-get) and also got some minor tweaks, personally I think its more a marketing tool to get Netbook users to try Ubuntu. Also promoted as an OEM option.

So why not use it? Bandwidth?

Wow that's great, how is the battery life? I have the 3 cell version and I'm wondering how it would fair if I install Ubuntu9.04

One more question, did you add more Ram?
 
Netbook remix is regular Ubuntu with 5 or so extra packages; all in the repo. Mainly things to make better use of limit desktop size, full screen only, etc. Tried it, didn't like it.

You might want to install dmiencode to make your One quieter. Regulates the fan speed.

I get around 3 hours on average. Tough to tell though, because I've only used it continuously on battery a handful of times. Other times I suspend when I need to move around, then turn back on a few hours later.

Have not tested battery life but I get about > 1:30 hours with my 3G on which is good enough for me on 8.10.

I have upgraded to 1,5GB and that makes a difference when your running openoffice (I use it alot) and GIMP and EMACS at the same time :D . Did it myself but it is a mission, the ZIF sockets are tricky the first time you try and figure them out. Murphy said the first chip I installed was faulty (install took 2 hours and I'm a qualified PC Technition) but the 2nd time took me 30 minutes.
 
Ext4 way outperformed ext2 on SSD (Acer Aspire One) Benchmarks. The concept of limited writes to a SSD is still highly debatable and with 5% being preserved for failure I'm happy to take the risk. Should my SSD fail completely, I would replace it with a ZIF CF.

What I do plan to though is install a 16 or 32 GB SD card to run my Virtual boxes off them. I use Windows in a Virtual Box for some development. Should my SSD show signs of partial failure I would also consider moving most of the install to the primary SD slot.
 
With regards to the Acer Aspire One, Ubuntu Remix and the network manager.With the network manager I cannot find the built in 3G modem to establish a connection to Vodacom.

I have the AAO150 with embeded 3G modem.

Any ideas?

Pity to hear it does not work out of the box for you.

I have ZG5 which seems to better supported. As the embeded 3G versions are still not common you would need to post on the Ubuntu forums on how to get it working.

I have a E272 Modem and have tested with the E220 modem without issues. Perhaps it might just be a driver that needs to be enabled? not so sure.

Thanks for the response, I see that on the Ubuntu Launchpad that this is a known issue and a resolution is under way. :-)
 
I didnt enjoy the netbook remix. Std is much better. IMO the netbook remix felt slower.
I hate the SSD in the Aspire one and i'm bashing it out of there and replacing it with a 1.8" HDD as soon as my order arrives.

I agree about the UNR vs standard. Much prefer standard. But I'm quite happy with the SSD. It's slow on write, but I don't do big writes, and after all the optimisations, it runs really well, and my battery life is great.
 
Moblin 2 is out I wonder how it compares to ubuntu... anyone want to give it a shot?

Not the latest, but the beta in March. Its friggin fast on the netbook, even installed it to the SSD. Big issue for me is no GUI 3G support and lack of packages.

Happy with Jaunty :D but will upgrade my SSD at some stage still.
 
Does the UNR 9.04 work well with cell cable connection? I prefer connecting to the net using my Nokia N79. :D How well does it fare in that region?:rolleyes:
