hey guys i'm waiting for the the card to come out so hopefully i can purchase it. what i want to know is if anyone knows whether or not its going to need a hectic system. i'm hearing now that its gonna require water cooling? and wat do you think the minimum PSU size is going to be? people also say its not going to be stable. IT CAN GO OVER 1GHZ CORE CLOCK:eek: and thats why i want it.i've budgeted 6000 rand for a gpu( huge upgrade from my 2 grand 9600gt. spending this much because im hoping it will last longer) so i want to find the most performance for that budget. too bad i cant go crossfire or sli:(
 
With that budget I would "consider" waiting a little bit...possibly for Nvidia's card that may come out in the Q4, prices could drop/ other high performance cards could be released.

yeah, hold out for a month or two, you'll see prices drop a little on the ATI side if Nvidia releases their cards too...

as for the folks that think the HD5870 @ 1ghz won't be stable, I think they might just be wrong, Asus wouldn't dare release a card that will bum out in a few months (bad PR). I also think ATI realised that kids (and companies) were going to fiddle around with there new cards, so they made things more robust, and even though they don't really like you overclocking, I think they know a good overclocking part moves units (look at the AMD phenom 2)

ok so i wasnt specific. i'm only planning on buying basically AFTER the xmas rush but will haveto be before i go off to varsity.
and if this gpu can go over 1ghz then would it be better then the 5870x2? and please read the question again. i basically wana know wat requirements its gonna need. im doing a relatively big upgrade(atleast for my budget) and i want to be as much informed as possible. if you look around the site you'll see i've started quite a few threads lately coz i want to make the most out of my budget. thanks

For 6k could you not 2 x 5850's in crossfire, that would surely beat the 5870 even with the mod?

I think no one really knows the answer to your questions yet. It definitely won't be better than a 5870x2 though.

As for its requirements...who knows...what does their website say...? Have you looked there..?

My! How times have changed. I did not have 6K for a PC when I went to varsity, nevermind a GPU! What has the world come to :)

6k is really not that much money hey, well when i say that i mean for something that can last 18-24 months.

Think about how much we blow on other BS like cigi's alcohol and what not.

so it sounds like 5870x2 is my best bet for lasting performance? and does x2 mean its basically 2 gpu's in one? so like core clock is 850 x 2?

haha and yeah 6k aint wat it used to be. still work just as hard for it....but it doesnt hold as much value :(

yes, that would offer the fastest gpu, unless Nvidia has a monster card, if Nvidia does, go for the Nvidia card :p

you should ask closer to the time I think, right now, best I can give you is an educated guess as I don't actually know how well the Nvidia cards will perform. btw, where you studying and what you studying?
 
o ok i see. but i would really like to try the ati gpu's been using nvidia for a while now. it just seems to me that nvidia is too expensive for their cards.

ha ha, don't play favourites, it's your money, you should want the best performance. and you didn't answer me question about what you studying next year and where:p
 
At pretoria and i'm studying a BIS(I TAKE MATH LITERACY, NUMERACY WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT :( so i cant take bsc cs or even bsc it )
 
do u need a gpu that powerful?

whats the rest of ur system like? i mean - how big is ur monitor?

cos unless ur playing on enormous resolutions, you really won't notice a difference between a 5870 and a 5870x2...

hell, even a 5850 or 4890 would suit you just fine.

just think if ur going from an 8600.. there's no need to totally break the bank, esp for negligible differences :)

i thoroughly enjoy computer gaming so i want something thats gonna give me high performance aswell as last long enough so i can accumulate enough cash for a new one in say 2 years.

and i have 1440x900 screen

lol, well, I think with that screen you should be about to play everything on max for a year or two :p
