asus eee - how do i switch from gprs to 3g?

how can i adjust this to switch to 3g /hsdpa

If the client is running VMCLite with his E220, Download version 3 from Vodacom's Website and flash the modem to version 3.

After that is done, under Settings ->> Network Preference, Select 3G Only.

Just got my eePC last night! Have not tried to connect yet.

It is Xandros and a lite version at that. Played on an EEE a while back. Very cute but not for me. The XP version will be out by the end of the month according to suppliers.

Were the modem on GPRS, last time you used it? Long shot, but I've seen some modems 'remember' their last setting.

There's a link somewhere here on a Linux version of a VMC-like utility.

Lastly, am going to see if I get get ginggs drunk enough (he's quite partial to a good Scotch ), if he'll port his app to Linux.

Not a long shot, its true.

Its almost as if the modem adapts to GPRS(say in an area where its the strongest or only signal), and when it comes into a area with 3G it struggles to attach to 3G.

I had times where i had to manually search for 3G.

stood infront of tower (300m away) and it didn't start 3g..

customer wants his toy back - so i'm gonna rush xp back on.

setup is easy...go to network>new connection>gprs/hsdpa connection (asks then to scan networks , then u select southafrica(vodacom) and whala.

No problem running 3G under Linux on my Eee, installed a Huaweii E220 USB modem using the pre-installed connection wizard, worked fine from the word go.
Got mine from nivo, excellent service. With Ubuntu Hardy Heron on the desktop and Eee for the road, no more MS license fees, never thought I'd see the day.

If anyone wants to do the XP conversion on an Eee PC themselves there's a brilliant 38-page (!) step by step guide at http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php. Cheaper than buying the XP version of the Eee if you happen to have a spare XP licence, and want an interesting little project.

For those who don't know, the Eee PC has been perhaps the ultimate hardware success story of the past year, with hundreds of thousands of the robust little things (originally designed to withstand schoolkids) flying off the shelves faster than Asus can produce them. Less than R3K for the basic model here, but there's a version out in SA soon with more memory, and by the end of the year there should also be a bigger screen (9" instead of 7.5), and even more storage. But by then the price will have crept up to that of a standard entry-level laptop (over R5K), so you really have to want something super-light (less than a kilo) or an intriguing toy!

That's correct, the E220 stores the last selected connection type (3G or GPRS, only or preferred) and the APN in its non-volatile memory, so you could plug it into a Windows computer and change the settings and it will remember those settings when you move it to another device.

The only thing stopping me from doing this right now is a lack of hardware to test on; anyone interested in loaning me an E272 for an indefinite period?

I admit I didn't read the 38 page guide, but does this also give you the multi-touch driver? I understand the XP version of the eee PC is the first Windows device to have this feature.

I plugged the E220 into my eeePC and it pretty much worked as is, no fiddling. Was driving to town yesterday (rather, Loanne was driving ) and got 1850/360 on the speed test.

(I'll find another thread to rave about the eeePC. It truely is great! ic, you need one!)

I've looked at the Eee online a while back, and again just now, apart from it being able to run Linux, and being smaller than my notebook, but much larger than an HTC phone [e.g. TyTn II], and being more energy efficient than my notebook, I doubt that I would be able to do much actual work on an Eee - even the Eee PC 8G only has 1GB of DDR2 memory - I would need at least 2GB for my VMs...

Which model Eee did you buy, and how much are these 'toys'?

Not sure if I can help ginggs port MDMA to Linux, but I agree that ginggs absolutely needs an E272 as an essential pre-requisite .
