Anyone here know or think these would be any good? Got a newsletter this morning where they were being promoted?

http://www.ngrcomputers.co.za/asus-notebook-p-4718.html

The reviews seem pretty good - but I am wondering if anyone has any hand on experience or has one themselves?

Thinking of using it when I am travelling as it is nice and small, and seems to have all the apps I need to check mail etc...

If you want to see exactly what is inside take a look at this link. That price seems a bit high. If you wait a bit it should come down. The cheapest model was supposed to sell for around 200-250 dollars. You can buy a 1.8GHz Celeron M based laptop that includes a 40GB hard drive and a DVD drive at HiFi Corporation for a similar price. I am sure there are better offers out there also.

I have been waiting for this phone since finding out about its development a few months back. I even subscribed to google alerts to tracks news of its arrival in the United States so that i can order it from there.

If only it shipped with an internal HSDPA/3G/Edge/Gprs module, it would sell like hot cakes. But it has a usb port and that is all that matters. I do not want it for me but I have a market for it.

Yeah I expected them to go for around half that. 4k isn't cheap for that.

Saw it last night at the Rectron/Corex ASUS roadshow - and it really IS dinky! Aesthetics aside: the one they had is a Far East model that has .cn or .jp characters on it so the keyboard looks somewhat messy and I think putting the speakers either side of the screen like that behind black plastic gives it a widescreen look that it doesn't have, what you have here is a pretty much solid state device - like a cellphone - with a MONSTER screen (on cellphone terms), a full keyboard and a wide range of apps.

People happily pay north of 4-5k for phones and yet y'all now wanna balk about something that's just about as mobile with so much more capabilities? .."*poc* *poc* *poc* - these forumites are crazy!" :D

Rectron removed it from their last pricelist. The base model was going to go for about R2500.

I'm sure when it returns, itll go for around the same. So it shouldnt be to expensive.

For me, R2500 is the highest i would be willing to pay for it.

If they increased the ssd to 16gigs and the screen size to 10inch's it would be almost impossible to resist.

Then and only then will it be worth R4000.

hi.considering buying Asus Eee PC 701 4G just for its portability. all i need is mobile internet, ability to view the odd photo, and word/powerpoint capability.is 4k too expensive?all the reviews seem pretty solid.

I went ahead and bought one - getting it tomorrow. The reviews all round seem pretty good, and price isnt too bad. I'll let you know what I think when i get it :)

I'm thinking it would make more sense to go for the cheap 2 gig model. You can then always just expand the drive with a usb stick.

The only real advantage i c with the most expensive one is it has a longer battery life.

But considering what you are getting, i'm not sure its worth an extra +/- R1200.

I'm quite interested to see how it wll run with an install of tinyxp. Should fly.

the cheapest model ive seen is the ASUS® EEE PC 700-W - Intel® 900Mhz Mobile ULV, 256MB DDR2 Memory, Internal 2GB SSD Based Hard Drive, Intel® 910GML Chipset
7" 800x480 LCD, 10/100 LAN, WiFi b/g, SD Card Slot, 3x USB 2.0, Linux OS, Mic & Headphone Jack, VGA Out, 4Hr Batt. Life, Only 890g
Ultimate Speed - 10 Sec Bootup, 5 Sec Shutdown, Optional USB Based External Optical Drive, Optional Carry Case - R3128
vs
ASUS® EEE PC 701 - Intel® M® 900Mhz ULV Processor, 512MB DDR2 Memory, Internal 4GB SSD Based Hard Drive, Intel® 910GML Chipset
7" 800x480 LCD, 10/100 LAN, WiFi b/g, SD Card Slot, 3xUSB 2.0, 0.3MP Webcam, VGA Out, Linux OS, Mic & Headphone, 4Hr Batt Life, Only 890g
Ultimate Speed - 10 Sec Bootup, 5 Sec Shutdown, Optional USB Based Extrenal Optical Drive - R3999

ie different processor, extra 2gb hard drive, extra 256 ram, extra webcam plus carry case
perhaps worth the difference in price??

They all have the same processor, don't they? And the ram seems to be upgradeable since it runs the normal DDR2 stuff. So the only real difference is the flashdrive capacity. The two most expensive models come with the bigger battery and xp, I believe, while the cheaper two models come with a little Linux install. Really tempting, but unfortunately I'm but a poor student and it's unlikely that I get one for xmas. Here's hoping though!

Intel® 900Mhz Mobile ULV
Intel® M® 900Mhz ULV Processor

Are those two different?

processor

confirmed with ngr computers.its a celeron processor being used-not the pentium m as stated in their product description.ram is upgradable - to 1gb methinks.

Has anyone got any info on what the spare battery will cost?

ive just ordered one.will let you know what its like when i receive it.
