ASUS EEE PC - 7" Laptop

The MSI Air a WAY better deal at the moment. Cheaper than the 10" EEE and better specs. Still, at $400 for the MSI, which equates to a probably R5-6k retail price here, I'd rather have a 15" laptop.

So would I. The beauty of the EEE for me was the fact that it cost around R2500 new. The 2G Surf anyway :)

So who's competing against who now? We have the EEE range from Asus, the MSI Air, ECS G10IL, HP, Packard Bell...who else?

Who sells MSI here anyways? I know LightEdge used to...but didn't they sink?

I picked up my 4G for a hint over R3k and I'm very happy with it, especially when you clock it to 900Mhz (The 2gb of RAM I've got in it, doesn't hurt either). The companies all forgot what was so great about the EEE, the fact that you can break it or lose it and not really worry, because it's so cheap (In the US anyway)

Indeed. These 'competitors' are not really offering the same thing at all.

I'll reserve judgment until I see actual prices for all these new devices :D

And the HP is in the same price range as EVERYTHING else, ie. 399 for a Linux version, 499 for Windows XP on it. I'd like the higher screen res you see on the new models though.

Where do you get that 15"?

And where would you get a 15" laptop at R6k?

*Edit: Nevermaaind. I see there are some LGs available for ~5K

Does anyone know if and when the newer models (EEE PC) as well as the recently announced Dell E comes to our shores?

Pretty pointless really getting an EEE for more than R2500....

Getting small laptops for more than R5k is overkill, might as well get a 15.4"

Well, I'm getting my 2G Surf for R2000 woot!
HenryJ, did you use an N-Lite version of XP?
If so, how fast is boot?

What about the Proline U100 aka MSI Wind - 10" Screen, 1,6GHz Intel Atom, 80gb SATA Hdd, WiFi, Bluetooth, Webcam, 1Gb Ram & Win XP Home. All for about R 4000 -R 4500.

As I said, paying more than R2.5k is crap for these small laptops.

I'm just going to need my EEE for study and random games

I was too lazy to try the N-lite install so I went with the normal XP install which takes up around900MB of space.

Boot time is fast - haven't timed it. I am guessing less than 20 seconds though.
