Ok.

I need your opinion on something. A colleague of mine is currently in Hong Kong and promised to bring me back something if I wanted anything.

I currently have a XFX Zalman 8800GT 512mb that I purchased recently for roughly R2.2k. Do you guys think I should ask him to bring me back a 4850 or maybe even a 4870?

I'm not sure if it will be a good enough upgrade to warrant spending another 2k or whatever. Also, any idea what the cards cost over there in Hong Kong?

certainly get the 4870, Its much faster than 8800GT and well worth buying. Sell the 8800GT to recover some of the costs

well AoC is looking allot better on exact same settings i have on my 4850 VS 8800GT.

AoC performance, well not ground braking Uber, but better - hope they tune the bloody thing.

will look at card more in dep when i have fitted da fan :)

I got my card yesterday, only going to install tomorrow morning.......
Try run your game with higher quality settings(AA/AF), that's where the differences come in.

Does anyone know when some of the lower-end HD 4000s are supposed to be coming out?

It's been a while since I last had a look at graphics cards... this HD4850 seems really good. :)

I was thinking of getting an 8800GT soon, but I am glad I hadn't decided yet as the HD4850 seems a way better choice.

definately ... :) ... Mine comes back from PCF this week ... can't wait to try it out :P ... and when my shipment from Arctic Cooling comes in ... I can't wait :p

it is a lot better, I think you'd be happy.

As for the previous post, the 4650/4670 will be out in September, and from what I gathered, they will sport a 128bit memory bus(oh good, another 128 bit bus, why can't they learn from Nvidia--->9600GT?)
it will have 320 stream processors, 8 Rops and 16 tmu's
it will consume less then 75 watts of power, and will have memory ranging from 1400mhz to 2000mhz. The 4650 will be priced below the nvidia 9600GT and the 4670 will be priced just above it.

What it interesting is that they say these cards are on the new architecture and not the last one (the 3000 series).
They how ever look like they just 3800's with a 128bit bus and less power consumption and no ddr 4 :(
I guess we just gonna have to wait and see what these cards can do!

where can i get the latest drivers for the 4870 seeming that amd's driver site is undergoing f... maintenance
