Atos eating front tyres.

Hi,

My wife's car has been doing this for a while now.

Car is 2 years old, I have replaced 3 front tyres on it already (one was because the tyre wore out then went flat so I replaced it with the spare and, I no longer have that tyre, the other time was because the insides became smooth on both tyres) and the two that are on the car are also no longer road worthy.

The cheap tyres that came with the car wore out quite quickly, the Continentals have lasted a bit longer but are also now on their last legs.

The insides of the front tyres wear out very quickly while the outsides stay perfect (I'll upload some images shortly).

I called the dealer and am waiting for some feedback as the car is going in for a service tomorrow.

Anyway, while waiting for the dealership to call me back I thought I would see if any of you would have an idea why this is happening?

Too much toe-out alignment. Take Gerhardva's advice, aside from the camber - those marie-biscuits will need a helluva lot of camber to wear out that quickly on the inside without a toe-out problem..
 
When doing a new tyre change, wheel alignment, wheel balancing is a must do.
 
Take it to a whell alignment place and have them check the camber.

Too much toe-out alignment. Take Gerhardva's advice, aside from the camber - those marie-biscuits will need a helluva lot of camber to wear out that quickly on the inside without a toe-out problem..

I'll do this but wheel alignment + balance each time tyres get changed and again about 6 months ago
 
Too much toe-out with the correct camber will result in that wear pattern. If you have too much negative camber with toe-in, then it will wear like that as well, but the camber will be noticeable (top of the tire leans more inward than the bottom).

Is the steering heavy/tight or easy/loose when you drive 20km/h?

:wtf: PLEASE check your alignment ASAP, you are chucking money down the drain this way - an Atos should not be heavy on tyres at all.

We have had the car for 2 years, I have done a total of 5 wheel alignments in this time (once was because I was not happy with the result the first time round so I took it back, that was at the dealership).
 
Wheel alignment been done at Hyundai, Hi-Q and Tiger wheel & tyre.
Don't they check this during wheel alignment by default?

They could be loading the wrong car onto their computer and adjusting incorrectly - either that or you have damaged your steering geometry - have you had it checked out with Hyundai?
 
Go to a TWT, I ave found that out of all the alignment places, they less frequently (0/10 so far) select the incorrect car model on the alignment computer. Places like SupaQuck and Quickfit select the wrong model 50% of the time in my experience (Polo 9N instead of Polo 9N w/Sport Suspension for 96KW TDi, '08 Civic instead of '08 Civic w/17" Rim Option).

Taking it there tomorrow Fazda but it has been this way since we got the car and each time I had the same debate we are having now :( (Your wheel alignment is out, but I had it checked, no that is the reason, oh and tiger wheel +tyre said "your wheel alignment is out and they are s**t tyres").
 
You will probably find that the OE tyres were cr appy, but the replacement ones should have been OK.

Yea I agree. I just want them to fix it this time :)

The back tyres are still the originals that came with the car and they are still in great shape (I know the back is lighter etc, just an observation)

It must be some manufacturing defect and I think I have given "Wheel alignment" enough chances now as an excuse.

My UNO's tyres would last and be road worthy till I replaced them purely because of their age (around the 4 year mark) and they took all the same daily routes as this car does.
 
It's not just Atos' that eat their tyres! Koenigsegg's do too!

When you take it for alignment, get them to print a copy of the figures and post them here. Often places will only adjust your toe, and ignore errors in camber and castor, by posting them here, someone will be able to check and see if they look reasonable.

I've even had a place edit the settings to ensure that all the values were in the "green" range on the screen, and they had to redo it when I showed them the correct specs in the handbook.

Over the years, I've had problems with alignment being set badly, so it's worth shopping around, and when you find somewhere that does a good job, stick with them.
