Attacked by pitbull

I have two Staffies. Very friendly dogs. The only reason why I wouldn't trust them with a small child is because they are strong for their size, and don't always realize how strong they are. I didn't expose them to small children while they were young, so that might have been a mistake. When socialized with other dogs, at a young age, they do well with other dogs.
 
I have a Roman Bull Terrier, and have always had them...

Incredibly intelligent, and loyal.. brilliant around children.

I have a preference for labradors now, simply because I have one and they have such a different temprement and are trainable as well, unlike staffies and bull terriers.

(Note, Bull terrier, NOT PitBull.)

Claiming that they'll protect them is a stupid point, because they'd probably get into a frenzy and shred the kids, themselves and whatever else is is a 10ft radius.

I feel sorry for you. I really do. Getting a stupid dog can be quite a disappointment. Generally though the dog gets stimulated by it's owner. If it's trained it becomes cleverer - amazing!!!

Furthermore, Dachshund was bread to hunt rabbits. Does this mean that it would hunt you children?

You have obviously read some badly written article somewhere article and quoted it out of context.:confused:
 
Let's not lump Bull Terriers with staffies and pit bulls.

I heard some chap on 702 have a moan about dogs may give kids a nip if they tease them, but a pit bull will kill the kid. Thought that crossed my mind is that there has been a fair amount of evidence that suggests that serial killers tend to have abused animals in their youth. Perhaps this is just nature's way of keeping the number of serial killers down.

You say lets not lump Bull Terriers with Staffies and Pit Bulls when you are in fact lumping Staffordshire Bull Terriers with Pitbulls (Pit Bull Terriers).

I have to agree with you here!!

As much as I love dogs, I wouldn't tease ANY dog. Some people wrongly believe that this is the way to make a dog into a good watch dog. It's much better to use positive reinforcement. This way you will maintain control and develop a predictable character.

Remember if you tease a Maltese Poodle, it may tear your pants. If you tease a muscle dog it will be worse!
 
I had a boerbull crossed with a rottweiler and that dog was amazing. Never did anything to any of us, incl the domestic worker. BUT anyone else had another thing comming:D

I also got 2 labradors very loving and they protect you with their life.

My neighbour recently imported a Roman Bull Terrier from the UK,the dog comes from some royal blood line or some ****. The total cost for the dog, and to get it in South Africa was R30 000. The dog's name is Sir Harry :D
 
Breed Standard: Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I agree that these dogs should not be lumped together. Also it's clear that we don't know the whole story. Usually it's not a case of bad dogs, but of bad owners.

Actually according to the "Official AKC Breed Standard for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier", this is the ONLY BREED where the liking of kids is in the breed standard. Here is an extract . . . .

Temperament
From the past history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the modern dog draws its character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog.​
 
As much as those people deny it I'm sure those dogs were involved in dog fighting. Both Eden Park and Eldorado Park south of JHB are notorious for dog fighting and pit bulls. In our local newspaper they've had article about the dog fighting in those areas.

The dogs were probably trained to be aggressive and attack. They also keep them hungry to keep their aggression up.

The pit bulls are also seen as a status symbol and youngsters are known to parade their dogs up and down the streets showing off the strongest best looking dogs...I guess they can't afford BMWs :)

All animals are dangerous its up to the owner of these dogs to train and raise them correctly. So in this case I would blame the owner of the dogs for not training they correctly or were the animals abused.

Staffie do not like other dogs, known fact. People they are ok with other dogs nope. When I was young my moms staffie killed my Jack Russel infront one me:(
 
rule of the thumb : any dog with terrier at the end of its name is not worth having, then again it comes down to how you treat your dogs, but some of them tend to be more aggressive then others

This might be true, but let me tell you a little story.

I for one never wanted any dog beside a Staffie. I grew up around staffies and had prob 2 different generations of Staffies growing up.

When I moved out and got my own house I was out looking for a Puppy to get as I was living alone and needed a mate. I was looking all over the place for breeder that sold Staffies. I found none.

I was adamant that I will only buy a Staffie and will hold out till I can get one. Driving to work one morning I saw the Black guy walking in the street I lived in with a dog. The Dog had Ski-rope around its neck and skinny as hell. I drove past and could see the poor dog couldn't even walk anymore it struggled just to walk.

I turned around and stopped by the guy. Asked him if that is his dog, he says yes. He found her a few days before in the veld left to die. He just wants someone to take care of it but everyone is showing him away. I told him I'll take the dog and in return I'll give the guy some clothes, food and money (It really looked like he needed it.)

That dog turned out to be a Pitbull from what I could tell it was a 100% pure breed. I had the dog taken to a vet sorted him out his cushions on his feet where raw from walking. All this was sorted after about 2 months. At that stage I would guess the dog was about 1 year old.

That dog was my best friend, she even slept in the same double bed as me. When I went out to the family farm the dog went with. we where best mates. I met my wife and still had the dog, had my Girl born at still had the dog, my Laaitjie was born and still had the dog. About 2 years ago on the farm the dog was bitten by a snake while we were having a braai. And died during the night.

Have no idea if that snake would have bitten any of us or whatever as the snake was about 3 meters from the braai area where we were having our dinner. She always sat next to me and I would feed her once we're done eating.

Suddenly she growled and jumped back; a fight ensued. We had no idea what was going on till we got the lights on. Dog killed the snake, a close to 2 meter long "Copper Kapel"

I cried so much during the night and the following day as if I lost a child. But I lost a sister. From then on I will defend these dogs with everything I have. No one wanted this dog because it was a Pitbull but it turned out to be a friend. I never had any problems with her in the 5/6 odd years I had her.

Everyone who knew the dog also started to love Pitbulls.

It's not the dog, it's how you raise it. That dog was my best friend ever.

I know the story is long, but the motherfk'rs who fight with these dogs or have these dogs just because it makes them feel good needs to be shot on sight. They have no idea what they are doing to one of the most loving animals in the world.

i totally agree with you. I don't see the breed as being a problem but the kind of people that tend to go for the breed and the way they treat them. I drive through Rosettenville on a daily basis and there's one chap who walks his pitbull through the neighbourhood. You can just see by his demeanour that his dog is more than a pet but part of who he is and builds his ego. Unfortunately in those neighbourhoods pitbulls aren't seen as loving pets but as weapons and are flaunted as such.

Maybe, but if you socialize them with other dogs while young, they will tolerate other dogs just fine. I took mine for puppy classes, and that did her a world of good. The chances are greater of other dogs attacking mine, than mine attacking other dogs. The male, only go for other dogs if I'm with him, if he is alone, he will play with any dog that make it into the yard.
