No I'm not reading all those pages.

But if my assumption is correct, I'm going to say an A3 is hardly a car to score cool points with.

I am not taking a dig at you Brawler, but I am not so sure if having to pour oil into your sub-100K km car 20 times between service intervals is customary of cars for people who have 'made it in life'.

@OP, take it in to the stealership and be adamant that the oil usage is not normal and you want it addressed as it was not rectified when the car was within it's freeway plan

So where does the oil go if it doesn't leak and the car does not smoke? Does it smoke so little you don't notice it?

the one mechanic, said something about it burning in the turbo or something? but it did also smell like he had a few on a Friday afternoon

Yip, the EA888 engine range (both in 1.8T and 2.0T) were notorious for their oil usage - the new EA211 engine series fortunately seems to be "cured" of this excessive oil usage malfunction

Regarding the smoke. I assume you mean dark smoke from the exhaust? Sort of like a diesel when you put foot? Or where would one see the smoke?

And will it only smoke when you put foot down?

Smoke will come at different times depending on where the oil leak is.

Turbo seals, it'll smoke pretty much all the time.

Smoke under power = rings
smoke at idle or on overrun = valve stem seals

Just an update. Contacted Audi SA a few weeks back. Car went back to the dealer for another test and they found something was wrong with the consumption. Audi SA agreed to pay to cover all costs to have it fixed. Not yet sure what actually caused this.

Most likely pistons and rings - known defects that Audi SA will cover. Had the same problem on both my 2010 A4 1.8T and 2010 Q5 2.0T. Oil consumption back to normal on my A4 (except that they messed up the oil level sensor in the process - took a while to get it sorted). (Sold the Q5 as it was an absolute dud - oil consumption was the least of its problems).

^^ So Audi SA sort this out even though the Audi in question is out of motor plan? I'm in a 2010 A3 1.8T using between 500ml to 750ml of oil per 1000km (will double check).

Yes. There were reports though where I had the consumption tested previously when the vehicle was still under the plan. Not sure if that helped my case, but I'd assume it did.

Edit. Also, if you had it serviced by someone other than Audi, they won't help. That was the first question Audi SA asked me.

They are all buggered and Audi knows all about it but seems to skirt the issue unless customer persist.

Pretty much requires a full engine rebuild, conrods and all.

Yea, 1.8T. Going to trade it in in December anyway.

So what should normal oil consumption be if using synthetic oil?
