Audi A3 oil consumption

Well on the turbo cars and especially Audi/VW they tend to use a bit more oil than normally aspirated cars.

On my 2.0T I reckon about a litre in between your 15000km intervals.

I can't tell you exactly as I pour it from the can and tend to try to keep it in the middle instead of too full.

Can't really say if you'll see a difference in oil consumption between mineral, semi and fully synthetic as I've always just run fully synthetic.

But I reckon if your oil gets so low that the light comes on anywhere between accurate services that is a sure sign something is wrong because it's not low then, it's virtually empty.

My light has never come on between services, but checking the levels it does get low.

My buddies with the problematic 1.8T's were putting a can in every 1000-1500km, and then often because the light came on.
 
Sjoe... OK, I'll have to monitor it but it could slowly be getting worse, I think the issue was there from 3 months old already but not as bad back then. I had no idea this was not normal :o

Other than spending about R500 on oil every 12 months, are there other foreseeable problems one might encounter with such a 1.8T?

If you keep it topped up probably not, but if it gets oil starved then pretty much anything can go probably big end bearings first.

But then it's doing this because there is an underlying problem in the first place so who knows.

If you are worried best to get on Audi's case.

How much are you putting in how often?

Putting in about 500ml to 750ml every 1000km, I'll double check in the next 500km or 1000km which time wise is 2 or 4 weeks more or less.

So I'm a year out of maintenance plan, car will be 6 years old in 2 months time. I didn't complain about this during maintenance plan (I didn't know it was an issue) and the dealerships didn't pick it up or bother to inform me. I can approach Audi SA but will they do anything about it given my particular story?

Yup you definitely have a problem engine there.

This really should be at the point of being a recall but Audi seem to be skirting that issue.

Every person I know who had this problem who have been a few has it sorted out but did need to put up a bit of a fight. They were all either just out of maintenance plan or very near to it.

I guess all you can do is try. Maybe chat to OP and see who his contacts were in this regard as he seems to have gotten it sorted by Audi SA directly.
 
OK, I checked my emails from 2012 when i first reported this problem to Claremont Audi when my A3 was 1.5 years old (after the first service). The service advisor suggested the oil consumption test after 1000km. They topped up the oil and for whatever reason, I forgot about following up on that.

Over a year later, a few months after the vehicle's second service, my oil light came on again. When i contacted them then the service admin person said their service advisor was on leave and said I could just top up my oil. I spoke to their foreman and then i purchased oil and just kept topping it up myself :( and then that was the end of that! I must have thought it was normal and then forgot about it...

Now to contact Audi SA and see if they can help me.

The clowns at VW doing my oil consumption test put the wrong sump plug on. Needless to say I was p***ed off having oil all over my garage and parking spot and having to bring it back in to restart the test. Bunch on interns working on the cars.

Have them send a team around to have the oil professionally cleaned off, no joke getting that schit off paving, lucky you didn't park in a common area with a body corporate to schit all over you?
 
No this was at home, but synthetic oil is mostly transparent so it didn't stain too bad. I ditched that VAG rubbish after their R100k repair didn't fix the problem.
 
So the wife's Audi is at the dealership as we speak to have this problem fixed.

They phoned me this morning advising me to change the timing chain at the same time for 12k as it is stretched. Apparently the water pump is also leaking and needs to be changed.

Did a bid of googling and found that all owners that had the oil consumption problem also had the timing chain issue. Seems they go hand in hand.

My waterpump went a week after I got the car back (was in for a month when they did the engine over) and left me next to a township at night. Don't know about the timing chain though. Are those not long life chains? Sounds like they're trying to get an extra few grand from you.

This is interesting:

However, in 2014 a class action lawsuit was brought against Audi in America, and while they have not formally admitted liability, they have made a settlement offer to American owners. This extends the manufacturers engine warranty to 8 years or 80,000 miles, and will fully cover the cost of the required repairs up to and including a new engine. American TFSI owners should read this website to find out details of this and how they can claim.

Get a Honda. My 1984 Ballade I sold to a friend has covered 615000km and the engine has never been opened. Uses no oil between the 10000km oil changes
