If you buy it now, it probably can't depreciate much more... And as a bonus, it will probably cost the same amount as the depreciation knock one takes when taking delivery of a new car ;)
 
What do you guys reckon, in a 2010 A3 1.8TFSI engine, how much oil is there between the MIN and MAX levels?

I seem to recall it's 1 litre because when it hits minimum that's when the light comes on and the screen actually saying add 1 litre.

Which would make one think that more than 1 litre would be overfilling it.

But this will be in your manual surely?

Then again VAG is so ****ing cryptic about oils with their silly code nonsense that probably not.

^^ I have been a bit swamped but yeah I should read the manual. I would estimate 1 litre is right, 'cause I'm routinely putting in about 650ml per 650km travelled, every 3 weeks for me. So when I top up it is close to MIN and when I am done I am close to MAX.
 
The oil problem was fixed and Audi SA paid for it in full.

Just like to mention that we never had a days issue with the car, apart from the high oil consumption that started a while back. Rock solid car otherwise. Traded it in though :)

Cool! How did you find dealing with them? I'm finding they aren't promising or even suggesting that they will come to the party, but I suppose that makes sense until they ascertain what the cause is.

Taking mine in to a dealership this week for a service and oil consumption test.

P.S. What happened w.r.t. the timing chain issue?

I've had no issues dealing with them. Audi SA was helpful from the start. They did take their time though.

I wasn't prepared to pay for the timing chain issue. My research has shown that a pre-mature timing chain failure could be due to oil problems. The workshop manager however has told Audi SA that this is not the case and that the timing chain wear and tear is normal at that mileage, which is absolute bollocks. I found a service interval from the US that states that the timing chain on the A3 should be checked on 90.000 miles. If they wouldn't have taken the engine out they would've never known the timing chain was stretched. It's not something they check on each time they service the vehicle as they have to take the engine out to do so.

They also told me the timing chain is not busted, it's just stretched and that they advise it be replaced at the next service. Following that information I traded it in as is for a new vehicle.
 
^ Cool, what did you trade it in for and if you don't mind me asking approximately what did they give you for the old A3?

What spec is the old A3? Stronic, sportback, optional extras?
 
Thanks :) So apparently on my model A3 (2010 1.8TFSI, engine number CDAA if that means anything) [-]they didn't have to weigh the oil after filling up, they are going to be relying on the onboard computer to tell them what the consumption is after 1000km[/-]. Greater than 500ml usage then it will fail, and something like if it passes then the cost of the test is for my account. Will take me probably 4 to 5 weeks do do my 1000km.

Oh, and looking back on my records, going from MAX down to MIN 1 litre is about right.
