Audi A3 oil consumption

This is not meant to be a malicious comment but why do people still buy Audi and VW's?

DSG issues
Multitronic issues
Turbo issues
Oil issues
Clutches going early

This is my observation IRL and on here. Pretty sure most car problems reported on this site are VAG.

A nice A3 sedan does tempt me but damn, I really enjoy having a car that is bullet proof where you dont need to worry or budget for this ***.

Because it's actually just the minority with issues that you hear about.

The better a product sells the more complaints there will be in the mix.

I have a 2.0T VW with DSG and 178000km on.

Gearbox is fine, turbo is fine , oil is fine and the clutch is fine.

The only out of service thing to have happened was the thermostat going recently and I think around 120k the PCV, both fairly inexpensive items and not anything outlandish that doesn't happen to most cars.

Cognitive bias.

I did a quick scan for "problems/issues/broke" in the first 10 pages of this section of the site:

1 x Audi (this thread)
2 x Ford
2 x Toyota (ok, one is the recent recall)
2 x Opel
1 x KIA
1 x Hyundai

I could have missed one or two, and maybe over 50 pages (I'm not that bored) things will look completely different.

Are you still pretty sure?

I think most people still believe the tales that have been perpetuated throughout the years about VW reliability. I too was burnt with a Golf 6 and 7. Never will I touch another VAG product again.

Audis are common but not as common as Toyota, Hyundai..
Perhaps its got to do with the complexity of the cars. A 'premium' car will be inherently more complex and have more things to go wrong (and do go wrong it seems)

Did you check "The Audi thread" (which could be renamed the My Audi is broken thread). I see 4 issues on the last page alone.

Well honestly what do you expect?

It's a thread that INVITES comments all about Audis.


If someone made an Opel/Toyota/Hyundai thread and all issues were put together in a single place in those threads then over time you would see much the same behaviour.

Also you have to ask how many users per 1000 here drive a VAG over other brands before you can start saying the cars are unreliable.

Many people in that thread bought Audis BECAUSE of that thread, pushing the demographic on these forums up even further.

And I bet if you had a poll from all owners in that thread less than 10% would vote that they actually had issues.

Obviously. If you give people a place to discuss these things, they will. Create a "The Toyota thread" and a "The BMW thread" and see how that goes.

I some how doubt it. That thread isn't my only point of reference. Although most members of that thread have had issues. I'm in no mood to count posts to prove a point so I will respectfully bow out.

Just out of interest when I bought mine it has nothing to do with the known alleged reliability or anything like that.

I looked at Mercedes, Volvo, Ford, Honda and even Audi and of the whole lot in my price range the VW offered the most car for the money.

Only 4-door with an automatic gearbox. Amazing boot space and reasonable fuel economy.

Heated seats and sun roof were a bonus.

Before that I had an Opel, my wife a Fiat. Before that I drove a Ford and before that a very old Merc.

Never owned an Audi but drove my father's for almost a year and that was problem free so it did earn my trust.
